JAMIE
“ H urry up,” the brown-haired maid ordered me, walking at a pace that made it necessary for me to practically run to keep up with her. Gone was the subservient figure she’d presented in front of the Sector Leader.
Her tone had gone from docile to gruff as soon as we got out of his sight. She practically shoved me when we’d gotten on the elevator.
I followed behind them partly relieved because there was now some distance between me and the Sector Leader but wary because these two women clearly didn’t like me.
Noah had told me that when she’d been assigned as a breeder, one of the things that had made her experience bearable in the beginning had been her maid. Maggie had indeed been a sweet woman who was helpful. I just didn’t appreciate it until this moment.
If these two were who I’d have to deal with while I’m here, I doubt I’d get much peace.
When I was a companion in District 2, there was one maid who was assigned to all of us.
There were 8 of us so there was only so much she could do for us at once.
I didn’t require much from her so we barely interacted.
Having two personal maids would be a new experience for me.
They stop in front of a big metal door. The one named Rhia places her palm against the heat sensor pane to open the door.
Both maids walk inside without waiting for me. “Are you coming or not?” Rhia calls out to me in an aggravated tone.
I square my shoulders and take a deep breath. I’ve survived worse than two surly maid, I just needed to take this experience one day at a time and just take comfort in the numb.
I head inside the room without any real expectations but I didn’t imagine my new quarters would be so barren. I’m immediately greeted with a chill that hits me right away. The room is so cold, I pull the fur lined cape I was given on the plane, tighter around my body.
Other than a bed a small wooden table with one chair in the corner of the room. The room wasn’t much bigger than the walk-in closet I’d had in the sector 2 manor.
“There’s the bed,” Rhia points to a small single bed with a thin white sheet on it. Besides being cold and small it was dusty. There were no other doors inside which meant there was no private bathroom.
Rhia turns to me with a smirk on her face.
“What’s the matter? Are you too good for this room?
Just because it’s your job to spread your legs for the Sector Leader and pop out a baby, it doesn’t make you any more special than the rest of us.
And another thing, don’t get too casual with the Sector Leader.
When you speak to him, you will give him the proper address. ”
The black haired one places her hand over her mouth and snickers.
It’s beyond my understanding why they’re so hostile toward me, but at this moment, I just want them gone. I don’t care about this closet of a room, I just want them out of my face.”
“You’ve shown me to my room. The two of you can go.”
“We still have to show you where your bathing room is located and the dining area where you’ll have your meals.”
My grip tightens on my cloak. “I’ll figure it out. Just leave. I want to be alone.”
They shoot each other silent looks.
“Well, you should at least get something to eat. The Sector Leader’s orders.”
I shrug. “If he gets upset, then I’ll deal with it? Now go.”
Rhia sneers. “You’re so haughty now, but it won’t be long before you realize you’re nothing special. Come on, Sahra.”
Just as they are about to walk out the door, a tall rail thin man in a colorful suit and green hair walks into the room.
“What the fuck is this?” he roars angrily.
Gone were the hateful bitches they were only moments before and returned was the docile maids who’d appeared before the Sector Leader. Their heads were bowed.
“Master Johra, I’m not sure what you mean. We brought the breeder to her room, per your instructions,” Rhia replied meekly.
“I instructed you to find a suitable room for her. This is a storage unit.”
Clearly this person holds a high position in this household for these maids to be afraid of him.
“We were told to give her a room befitting a breeder,” Sahra whines. “We’re newly assigned here and thought this would be sufficient.”
“Not even the servants’ rooms are this small. Lord Draken will hear of this offense. For now, the two of you are dismissed.”
They bow their heads and scurry away.
I’m not sure what just happened but it was interesting to watch unfold.
“I’d personally like to apologize for the mix up.” He places his hand over his chest and bows. “We’ve never had a breeder in the fortress before so I’m sure there has been some confusion. I made the error of entrusting the tasks to someone else to find you suitable accommodations.”
I wasn’t sure what to say. It was pointless to tell him that the maids were hostile toward me. I’m sure there were plenty of people here who’d hold some level of disdain for me.
“I’m Johra, Lord Draken’s personal attendant, basically his caretaker. And how may I address you, Miss?”
“Just Jamie. Look, you don’t have to be formal with me. And I don’t need a fancy room either. This place is fine, it’s just a little cold but I can get used to it.”
He shakes his head. “No. This is unacceptable and if Lord Draken were to see this, he would have my head. Follow me. You’re going to be on the top floor.
I thought this would be the floor you’d be staying on, however I misunderstood the instruction.
Now that I’ve found you proper accommodations, I’ll take you there. Please come this way.”
At least he was more courteous than the two maids. By now, I’m exhausted. After my nightmare on the plane and my encounter with Lord Draken, I didn’t get much rest afterward. I’m so tired, all I want to do is sleep and forget about my predicament.
Seeing I don’t have much of a choice, I follow him down the hall way and as we make our way to the elevator, I realize how isolated that makeshift room I’d been placed in from the rest of the rooms on the floor. It became clear to me that those maids had deliberately set out to humiliate me.
When we finally make it to the top floor I notice the difference in décor. A purple carpet accents burgundy walls trimmed in gold. Paintings of various landscapes are hung and displayed with care. This looks more like the luxurious homes of wealthy superious .
As if he read my mind, Master Johra says, “This floor is reserved for the Sector Leader, Chancellor in Arms and a few other high-ranking members of the household. You’ll enjoy a level of privacy in this wing of the fortress while still being able to access all the amenities.
My room will only be a few doors down from yours so if you need anything, let me know. ”
The room he presented me with is a stark difference to the storage closet Rhia and Sahra had initially lead me to.
When I walk inside, there’s a sitting area with a sable couch with a matching lounger.
To the side is a black dining table that had four chairs around it.
An open archway leads to the sleeping area, with one of the largest beds, I’d ever seen, covered with a black fur blanket and fluffy pillows with dark satin pillow cases.
“That’s a large bed,” I say more to myself than to the attendant.
“Well, you are the breeder. It stands to reason that Lord Draken would come to your room on occasion. The bed should be comfortable to your both.”
The reminder of why I’m here makes me shake as I remember how his touch had broken through something within me. I instantly push that thought away. This is just another assignment, I tell myself.
“I can show you the rest of the room if you’d like.”
I shake my head. “No, I can figure my way around.”
“Okay. I’ll have someone bring up some food for you.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“With all due respect, Miss, I don’t care whether you eat or not.
Lord Draken has ordered it and it’s my duty to follow those orders.
” Johra’s words were curt but his face remained expressionless.
He was still less offensive than the two maids.
If I had to deal with him on occasion, I figure things could be much worse.
“Fine. Would you mind if I’m left alone or is there something else, expected of me right now?” I don’t bother hiding the hostility from my tone.
My nerves are on edge and all I want to do is lie down and curl myself up in a ball.
“Of course. In the meantime, you can use the voice activated system in the room to contact me if you need anything or if you need to reach the Sector Leader.”
I shrug. “Okay.”
He heads to the door and stops and faces me again. “There are people here who don’t want you here and they may try to make things difficult for you. I suggest you watch your back.”
I’m finally left alone to wonder what the hell did he mean by that?
