I lowered my lips to her forehead and pulled the blankets up around her; she had fallen asleep so fast. The first day here had really taken a lot out of her but I was pleasantly surprised to find she was adjusting well.

At first, I thought it was going to be impossible to get her to like it here—let alone to like me.

But every corner of her mind held my name and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Exiting my room, I conjured Cam and Mal, dumping them from my palm onto the floor.

The shadow twins stood before me and Mal nodded his head to me.

“Alright boys.” I walked between them and wrapped my arms around their shoulders, “Listen close.”

I sent the twins to the Rivers Styx; I needed them to go up top for a few necessities. This had to be perfect. I spent the last two hours clearing out a spare room in the estate, and scouring Deer’s brain as she slept—making sure no nightmares crept through the cracks.

The room was a hair larger than mine; the walls lined with empty shelves that previously held my father’s tomes.

By previously, I mean I carried every single one out and piled them into my mother’s wardrobe room.

Those dusty, unread things could be her problem—it’s not like father ever read them to begin with.

I took special care to make sure every speck of dust, every cobweb, and every hell spider was eradicated from the space—before I lit all five of the fireplaces to warm the room. I had about six more hours until Deer would likely wake up, and this needed to be perfect for her.

Mal appeared beside me, causing me to jump and I shot him a glare.

He sneered, as he adjusted the large cardboard box in his arms.

“Where’s—”

Cal appeared beside him and I rolled my eyes. He dropped the box at my feet, such an ornery bastard, he could be.

“Would it kill you to be careful,” I scoffed and he rolled his eyes.

“I wish,” he quipped in reply.

I should have done better when I created him. When I was a kid, I didn’t know creating minions such as them would spawn from parts of my emotions.

Mal placed his box beside Cams, and we began sifting through the contents.
