I stood staring—my face colored in shock, at my parents.
Panic swelled in my gut, as I asked, “why are you guys here?”
This wasn’t ideal, in fact, this was bordering on disaster. I had planned a nice dinner for Deer, a first date of sorts – hoping it would be a smooth transition which would give me the opportunity to explain myself. Having my parents stop by was far from what I had wanted for tonight.
My mother scoffed and my father sighed into his hands.
“What, no hello? One would think you’d be delighted to see us!” My mother sneered.
“Yea, so great. I love your little visits,” I mumbled.
“Sorry, come again?” her tone was sickly sweet, as she cocked her head in my direction.
“I said, it is so great to see you. I love when you visit.” I did my best to force a smile, but knew it showed as a grimace at best.
This is awful—beyond awful. Deer’s first night in Hell would actually be hell with my mother here.
“What is it, son? From the look on your face, you’d think we just showed up and told you our eternal damnation had been lifted, and we’re moving to heaven.” She barked a laugh.
“I have a guest,” I said firmly.
“A guest?” Mother mused while looking toward my father, whose head remained resting in his hands. He may be immortal, but she’s aged him.
“Yes, an important guest. And we are set to dine here, she will be arriving shortly, so I need you to leave,” I urged.
Fuck.
My mother cackled wildly as her eyes widened in surprise. “She? Did you hear that Stan, our son has a woman coming to dine with him! And to think, all this time I was convinced that I would have to be the one to find you a suitor to rule with you in your father’s place!”
I couldn’t stand how she called Father Stan, even more so I couldn’t believe he let her do so. She caught my glower and leaned forward, propping her chin on a fist.
“Oh, relax Rai. I’m just surprised is all! Your father was already ruling Hell at your age, so forgive me for thinking this day would never come.”
I winced. “Don’t call me that. And Father only ruled so young because he had the misfortune of being arranged to have you as his mate, Mother. Forgive me for wanting to enjoy who I spend my eternity with.”
She rolled her eyes and waved me off.
