A.Z

I didn’t understand why I was irritated watching Brynleigh hug Deonte Malone.

I didn’t have as much money as him, but I was far from broke.

In the looks department, I was winning as well.

Damn sure had a lot going for myself. There weren’t too many men that could intimidate me but if Deonte was trying to get at Brynleigh, I didn’t see her rejecting him.

Why the hell did I even care? We’d gone on one date, and we’d never had sex.

Brynleigh could do what she wanted, and I could too.

I felt lame as hell, however because out of all the fine women in the club, I kept staring at her like a creep.

“Deonte has all the bad women in his section. We need to be partying with him,” Scott shouted beside me causing me to turn and frown.

“We’re surrounded by bad women. I told you about that groupie shit.”

Scott sucked his teeth and waved my comment off. “And I told you about that dumb shit. I’ve never been a groupie. We have the bad college chicks around us. He has the bad ass grown ass women that will do something strange for a lil’ piece of change.”

Ignoring him, my gaze drifted back over to where Brynleigh stood.

She wore some shorts and a tight shirt with heels that had laces that tied up her legs.

She was sexy as fuck but still not in the same half naked spread my legs to the highest bidder way like the other women in the section.

Yet, Deonte seemed to be more focused on her than anyone else.

They had to be the sister and the sister’s friends that she told me about.

The one she stayed closest to looked just like her.

Compared to them, Brynleigh seemed a little out of place, but she was still bad.

Too bad. I wanted to go over and say something to her, but for some reason, I hesitated.

While I contemplated going over to Brynleigh, I didn’t pay attention to the person approaching me.

If I had, I would have recognized her walking toward me long before she appeared in my personal space.

Rhia tucked a strand of hair behind her ear as she stood staring at me.

If she was waiting on me to speak to her, she’d be waiting a long ass time.

I didn’t like to think of myself as bitter.

Our relationship didn’t work out, and I was cool on it.

I didn’t hate her guts, but I also didn’t have anything to say to her.

“I know you hate me…”

“Nah, I don’t.” I corrected her. A glimmer of hope flickered in Rhia’s eyes. “Hating you would require energy that I don’t have to give you. I don’t feel anything toward you.” My tone was matter of fact and full of honesty.

Rhia’s face fell, and her bottom lip quivered. “You’ve never made a mistake, Azra?”

“We’ve been broken up for almost three years.

You doing this in the middle of the club is crazy as hell.

” Over Rhia’s shoulder, I saw Brynleigh and her small group leaving the section.

Not wanting to miss the opportunity to talk to her, I walked away from Rhia.

After we started our journey at different colleges, she was feeling neglected and worried that I was cheating on her, even though I wasn’t doing shit.

We’d been doing a lot of arguing, and I didn’t want to lose her.

One night, in the middle of my hazing period, I was exhausted, but I drove three hours away to her dorm room in Charlotte, North Carolina to assure her that I wasn’t cheating on her.

Rhia’s roommate must have hated her guts because she let me in the room, and I found some nigga in her bed, flat on his back, with her head on his chest. They were fully clothed, but I was so livid, I was practically foaming at the mouth.

When I woke her up, and Rhia realized I was in her room, she damn near jumped out of her skin.

She almost broke her neck scrambling out of bed and when her friend woke up, he looked like he wanted to piss himself.

They were talking over one another trying to assure me that nothing happened.

Buddy got the hell out of dodge, and of course, the tears started.

Rhia began to cry and tell me that she was venting to him about our relationship issues, and they fell asleep talking.

So, her venting to a ‘friend’ required them being in her bed hugged up with one another.

I didn’t even respond. She was insulting my intelligence, and I was already pissed, so I felt it was best that I left.

I blocked Rhia and every time she called me from one of her friend’s phones, I blocked them too.

She called my sister crying, but Tyra knew better than to speak to me on Rhia’s behalf.

Mistake or not, it was forever over for her.

When I exited the club, Brynleigh, her sister, and their friend were standing on the side of the building. When she noticed me standing there, she walked over to me with a slight smile on her face.

“Hello Mr. Phi Rho.”

“Does he check all your boxes?” I peered down at her and spoke in a low tone.

Brynleigh’s brows hiked. “Does who check all my boxes?”

“Deonte.”

Her grin broadened. “Jealous?”

“Maybe.”

When she realized I was serious, her smile faltered. “I don’t even know that man to know what boxes he checks. He did ask me out on a date though.”

Jealousy coursed through my veins causing my body to heat up. “Did you say yes?”

“I did.” At least she was honest.

“I hope you have a terrible time.” Brynleigh laughed and punched me playfully in the arm. “What are you doing standing out here?”

“We rode with an idiot, and she got mad and left early. Waiting on a ride share.”

I frowned. “Hell nah. Cancel that shit. I got y’all.”

“You sure?”

“What you mean am I sure? Yeah.”

“I know since we broke up you’ve been out here doing the most, but this is a new low.” I looked over and saw Rhia looking Brynleigh up and down with a scowl on her face. I didn’t know what kind of alcohol Rhia had consumed that put a battery in her back, but Brynleigh wasn’t what she wanted.

I was sure that Rhia had never been in a fight in her life. When Brynleigh looked at Rhia and laughed, I was stunned, but I wasn’t going to push my luck. “Come on.” I placed my hand on the small of Brynleigh’s back and attempted to guide her away.

“I broke your heart, so you’re slumming it with low life ass drug dealers?” Rhia scoffed.

I would never hit a female, so I was glad that Rhia sealed her fate.

Brynleigh tried to give her a pass, but she insisted on popping off.

When Brynleigh lunged in Rhia’s direction and hit her in the face with her fist, I didn’t even try to stop her.

Rhia didn’t even attempt to fight back. She covered her face with her hands while Brynleigh punched her in the head.

The moment Brynleigh’s sister saw that she was fighting, she ran over, and then I had to break it up.

It wasn’t fair for it to be two against one when Rhia’s dumb ass wasn’t even fighting back.

I grabbed Brynleigh around the waist and pulled her off Rhia.

“You got her. Come on let’s go before someone calls the police,” I spoke directly into her ear.

A crowd had gathered. Brynleigh’s chest heaved up and down as she glowered at Rhia who was wiping blood from her nose. “You’re going to jail, bitch!”

“You’re exactly the type to start some shit then call the police. Learn to keep your mouth shut, lame ass bitch,” Brynleigh spat as I ushered her away.

“Who the hell was that?” Brynleigh’s sister asked.

“I’ve never seen that broad a day in my life. She just came out of nowhere and started running off at the mouth. I tried to let her live, but she kept going. Who was she?” Brynleigh turned toward me with a smirk.

“She’s my ex,” I mumbled with a sigh. “What’s your address?” I looked over my shoulder at Brynleigh’s friend in the backseat.

Once she gave me her address, I realized that she lived in the same apartment complex as Bryleigh and her sister.

Glad I didn’t have to go far, I put my gear in drive and pulled out of the parking space.

Brynleigh and her people talked about the fight while I drove in silence.

I couldn’t believe Rhia. Being that she lived in Charlotte, I had no clue how she knew Brynleigh sold pills.

Clearly, her cousin who attended Blake U had been running her mouth.

I couldn’t care less what she thought about Brynleigh. I’d choose Brynleigh over her any day.

When I arrived at the destination, Brynleigh’s sister and friend thanked me as they got out of the car. I grabbed Brynleigh’s hand to keep her from getting out of the car. “I’m sorry about that.”

“About what?”

“The fight.”

“Nah, don’t be sorry about that. Be sorry about the fact that you have bad taste in women.”

“Is that why I like you?” I laughed.

Brynleigh hit my arm. “No, it means your taste is improving. Ass wipe.” She stuck her tongue out at me, and I laughed harder. “Thank you for the ride.”

“Come here.” Suddenly, I wasn’t ready for her to leave yet. I was always shocked when Brynleigh complied easily. She leaned over the center console, and I brushed my lips against hers. When she didn’t snatch away or curse me out, I kissed her again but that time, I parted her lips with my tongue.

We sat in my car kissing like two horny teenagers until my dick was throbbing in my jeans. I kissed Brynleigh’s chin then the corner of her mouth. “Okay, I gotta go, ‘cus you got my dick hard as shit.”

“You’re the one that kissed me.”

“I know.” My eyes darted back and forth across her face.

Brynleigh rolled her eyes with a small simper. “Do you want to come in?”

“Sure.”
