Page 114 of Bite The Power That Feeds
“You want to play.” He tightened into his defensive stance, ears folding back, his teeth extended.
“I want to kill.”
“Be my guest.” He lunged at me, but it happened so fast.
Without knowing how it even happened, I was thrown across the room and against another wall, twelve feet in the air. My back hit the wood, caved in my armor more, and then I landed hard against the tile.
A cold laugh came from his mouth, standing there while werewolves and vampires fought one another, bodies piling on top of one another.
“Kingsnake!” Cobra tried to break free, but a werewolf came from behind, and he was forced to save his own neck since he couldn’t save mine.
Fuck, I might die.
The Werewolf King came forward. “No vampire can kill me.”
I was on my feet, staring at a foe three feet taller than me, with a muscle mass that was several times greater than mine. He threw me around like I weighed nothing, like my armor was a set of knitted feathers.
“Did you think you would be the exception?” he asked with a laugh. Now he was just toying with me, knowing it wasn’t a fair fight, that I had no chance of killing him, so he might as well fuck with me. He came closer, cutting me off from everyone else. “I’ll rip your head clean from your shoulders and stick it on a pike so everyone can see, including that prey you’ve made your wife.”
I felt sick, not because of my impending death, but the heartache I would leave behind. But I wouldn’t beg for my life. I wouldn’t ask Fang to save me, not when he was too far away and powerless against this monster.
I had to fight.
I reached for my dagger and threw it as quickly as I could, aiming for his heart.
He was quicker, angling his arm in the way and taking the blade in the forearm. He twisted his arm back and forth to regard the blade and the dribble of blood that stained his fur. It was inconsequential to him. Utterly.
He looked at me again. “Kinda tickled.” He pulled out the dagger and tossed it aside.
Werewolves couldn’t speak in their wolf form, but for some reason, this one could, and that made it even more sinister.
He rushed me, and by a miracle, I dodged it and sliced my sword across his side.
But he immediately grabbed me and threw me again, hurling me into the wall across the room.
I collapsed again, and that was when I recognized the injuries under my armor. He would beat me until I couldn’t stand, in too much agony to move, and then he would rip my head from my shoulders and eat my corpse.
There was no way out of this.
Fang.I pushed myself to my feet and grabbed my sword.Tell her I’m sorry…and I love her.
Nooooo!
I shut off my mind so I wouldn’t have to listen to his grief. Wouldn’t have to listen to whatever message Larisa would have in return. With my sword gripped in my fingers, I straightened and faced my foe, refusing to give up until I was dead.
“You’ve got more spine than I realized,” he said. “Too bad I’ll have to snap it.” He swiped at me, and I moved out of the way, digging my sword deep into his side. But it didn’t slow him down, and he grabbed me in his paw and slammed me down into the floor before he threw me again.
This time, I hit the floor and didn’t move.
My sword was still in his body, and he left it there, like a badge of honor.
He drew close, his feet audible against the tile, even over the sounds of battle.
I pushed myself up, but barely, everything shaking, bones broken. I slipped, and my knees hit the tile.
“I almost feel bad.” He sneered at me, his smile toothy.
I forced myself up, to die on my feet rather than weak on the floor. But it took all my strength to stand. Took all my strength not to collapse back and let him finish his torture.
