“Yes. I said so. I’m totally okay with being his assistant. For now.”

“I meant are you okay with watching this show?”

I don’t even know what we’re watching. “Oh. Yeah. Fine. Thanks… I’m really grateful for this job… I don’t know if I mentioned that.”

He almost laughs. Of course I didn’t mention it. Not in plain spoken English, anyway.

“I really am,” I repeat for emphasis. “I’ve never had a 401(k) before.”

He nods and takes another bite of steak before saying, “Never too soon to start saving for retirement. I have a few books and articles that you can read. If you’re really interested in learning about the business.”

I nearly drop my fork and knife. “Of course I’m really interested.” I look over at him, taking care not to sound defensive or sarcastic. “I’m here because I want to work. I want to do good work.”

He nods, still staring ahead at the TV. “Good. I’m glad.”

I keep looking over at him until he acknowledges me. When he finally glances my way, I say, “I’m glad to be back, Dad. I won’t let you down.”

He blinks and looks down at his plate. “I know,” he says quietly.

It’s the longest conversation we’ve had in five years, and I am determined to continue along this path with him. It’s not nearly as fun as flirting with Wes Carver, but that’s not all there is in life.
