I’ve just climbed out of the shower, and Emery reaches for me blindly, hearing the door open, and I chuckle as she hastily tries to wash the soap from her hair that is getting in her eyes.
I watch her as I dry myself off with a towel, admiring her curves as the water cascades down her bare skin.
Her delicate features scrunch up in frustration.
Emery’s petite figure is perfection. I can’t help but feel lucky to have her as mine and I have to fight the urge to climb back in there with her.
She rubs the soap from her eyes. “You’re hopping out already?” she whines at me reaching for the soap.
“I have to run into town, I won’t be long, and Kyrio will remain here with you,” I tell her and her brows crease in the middle.
“Can I come with you?” she asks and I sigh. Opening the shower screen, I lean in gripping her throat gently and dragging her closer. “I won’t be long, promise. Go have breakfast,” I tell her then quickly pressing my lips to hers.
I quickly dress, and grab my wallet, as I am leaving the room. The shower cuts off and I quicken my step knowing if she asks again I will become distracted by her and forget I have to go into town to get her present.
Rushing down the steps, I pass a few pack members who nod respectfully. I slip out of the packhouse, the early morning air crisp and filled with the scent of pine as I make my way to my car where Kyrio is waiting.
“Alpha,” Kyrio acknowledges as I approach.
“Keep an eye on Emery for me, she’s showering.
I shouldn’t be too long,” I tell him and he nods, handing me my car keys.
I climb into the driver’s seat for once, not stressing about leaving Emery by herself.
The engine purrs to life as I turn the key in the ignition, a familiar hum that brings a sense of calm.
My mind weaves through memories of the last couple days. Emery has become the heartbeat that thumps hard in my chest. For the first time I feel wide awake and I know it is the bond and the relief of having marked her.
I find myself smiling as I think about that. Emery is mine, and for once I belong to someone else, someone who wants me, not out of necessity, not because they feel obligated to stand by me like my pack, but because she actually wants me.
I’m excited about the surprise I’ve planned for Emery.
It’s more than just a gift; it’s a way of me showing her I trust her.
Tomorrow, we’ll visit her grandmother and little brother, but today I am headed in to get the phone I ordered for her last night while she was asleep so she can call her grandmother.
The town is quiet as I drive through the familiar streets, the early morning sun casting a golden glow on the buildings. I park the car and enter the small electronics store, nodding at the shopkeeper who recognizes me.
I approach the counter, where a young man with glasses stands, ready to assist.
“Good morning,” he says with a smile. “How can I help you today?”
“I placed an order for a phone last night,” I reply, my voice steady. “I’m here to pick it up.”
The young man’s eyes light up with recognition. “Ah, yes! The special order for Emery? We have it right here.” He reaches under the counter and pulls out a small box, neatly wrapped in silver paper.
“Tara told us you went to Alpha Farren’s pack?” he asks as I am about to leave. I stop, glancing at him, and he chews his lip nervously.
“Yes, why, what’s up?”
“Nothing, just I have friends I haven’t heard from since the attack. We play video games online, but I haven’t heard anything since the attack,” he tells me.
“Pack members of Farren’s?” I ask him and he nods then sighs.
“I know they’re a rival pack, we just play video games online, I—” I hold my hand up stopping him.
“Adam, stop. I don’t care if you speak with members of other packs,” I tell him. He should know this, but I also know some pack Alphas forbid it.
He lets out a breath of relief. “Tara told me you visited them. It’s just since Elder Eric ordered the pack to be interviewed, I haven’t heard from them,” he tells me. I pinch my brows together.
“Elder Eric? You mean the council?” I ask him and he nods.
“Yes, Mathew, one of my friends, said the entire pack was being bused out to be interviewed the next day. I haven’t heard from him since.”
“I am taking my mate to see her grandmother tomorrow morning, on our way home we’ll stop in, and I will find out who’s in charge, okay?”
He nods and I turn to leave.
Is Alpha Farren’s pack still being held? And why? I’ll have to call Elder Eric later to find out what’s going on. Putting those thoughts aside, I head home. The drive home doesn’t take long, and I find myself excited to give Emery her present.
Arriving home, I’m greeted by Kyrio. “She’s been annoying the hell out of me waiting for you,” he says, a knowing look in his eye.
“Where is she?” I ask him, climbing out of the car.
He nods toward the back of the packhouse. “Out training with Tara and the others. I sent them to train so she’ll stop pestering me about when you’d be back,” he laughs.
Tossing him the phone, he catches it. “Put that in my room,” I tell him, and he nods while I wander toward the back of the packhouse to where Emery is training. The sight of her.
When our eyes meet, her excitement is palpable, and I can feel the bond between us pulsating with energy and her excitement. It’s so strange being able to feel her so completely, but there is no better feeling.
“Finally,” Tara groans. “Man, I hope I wasn’t this clingy and annoying when Kyrio marked me,” Tara states, shaking her head at Emery.
Emery’s cheeks heat and I smile, slipping my shirt off to train with her only for her to crash into me, her arms slipping around my waist. Peering down at her, she rests her chin on my chest peering back.
“I take it you missed me?” I chuckle.
“Just a little,” she breathes, and I can feel the tension in her relaxing. Leaning down I kiss her gently before pulling away.
“Come on, let’s finish up your training,” I say, guiding Emery back to the training area.
Tara raises an eyebrow at us, with a mischievous grin. “Well, well, look who’s all loved up,” she teases, earning a playful swat from Emery.
“Shut up, Tara,” Emery blushes, but her smile betrays her embarrassment as she takes her stance, and I laugh at her reddening cheeks.
Suddenly she lunges forward but I sidestep skillfully, grinning like a wolf marking its prey when she attacks me again. In a swift move that surprises even me, Emery lands a clever hit that sends me reeling backward.
The impact of her strike reverberates through my body, momentarily knocking the wind out of me.
I stumble back, my equilibrium thrown off by the force of her attack.
Emery’s eyes widen with surprise and triumph as she realizes she actually got one over me.
A proud grin spreads across her face, her cheeks flush with excitement.
“You caught me off guard there,” I tell her.
She puts her hands on her hips, a playful glint in her eyes.
“Or maybe I’m just too good for you,” she taunts.
“Oh really? Is that so?” I reply.
“Well, if you think you’re so good, why don’t we make this interesting?” I suggest a mischievous twinkle in my eye. Emery’s grin widens as she leans in closer, her voice full of curiosity.
“Interesting...”
I get to my feet, “How about a little wager? The first to three knockdowns wins. If you win, I will give you your surprise before dinner.”
“And if I don’t?”
I raise an eyebrow, teasingly confident. “You get on your knees for me,” I tell her and her eyes flash and she licks her lips.
“Somehow, I don’t think I lose in either one,” she laughs.
Emery launches herself toward me. I sidestep just in time, but she quickly recovers and spins around effortlessly, delivering a swift strike that grazes my side. The impact stings, but I can’t help but admire her growth and skill.
“Not bad,” I admit through gritted teeth.
“Looks like you’ll be sharing your secret early,” she taunts but before she can step away, I grab her wrist pulling her flush against my bare chest. Her gasp is swallowed by my lips claiming hers in a possessive kiss.
“Or maybe I’d rather have you for dinner,” I growl into her ear, eliciting a shiver that courses through her entire body. And god! That does things to me.
Threading my fingers through her hair, I pull her face toward mine for another searing kiss while my other hand travels unhurriedly down her back, tracing the contours of her curves through thin fabric.
She moans softly against my lips when I grip her ass firmly reminding her who’s really in control here.
Breaking away from the kiss slightly breathless, and I give her a gentle shove, not expecting it, she trips over her own feet. “One,” I tell her with a smirk, and she shoots me a glare.
“That’s cheating!”
“Is it?” I ask her as she gets to her feet.
She charges at me, I sidestep, before knocking the back of her knee and she topples forward.
Moving quickly, I grab her before she faceplants the ground and she gasps, putting her hands out to brace for impact leaving her in a precarious position with me behind her and I shove her on her hands and knees.
“Two! Hm, maybe I’ll hit you from the behind when I win,” I muse, liking this view of her. I let her go and she growls, turning on me and lunging at me. I laugh before grabbing her and pinning her on her back. She huffs and I press my weight down on her.
“But you do have such plump lips,” I smile leaning down to kiss her.
“Three,” I mutter against her lips, and I feel her smile against mine when my tongue sweeps across her lips.
With a devilish grin, I kiss her again, savoring the sweet taste of her lips.
She groans softly as I start trailing kisses down her neck, feeling her pulse quicken beneath my touch.
My hands roam over her body, when someone clears their throat loudly, making us both freeze.
Looking up, Kyrio is standing there, arms folded staring at the forest. “Interesting defensive maneuver, Alpha, but seems more fitting for the bedroom, not at training,” he reminds me and I laugh, glancing down; Emery’s face is bright red.
Yeah, this bond is definitely growing inappropriately strong.
