Loading the truck with all the supplies we managed to obtain while here, I speak with Amanda.

Amanda is Anastasia’s older sister and luckily for her, she wasn’t home when their mother was taken, who was heavily pregnant with Anastasia at the time.

She is only six years older than Anastasia, and she looks exactly like her, which is heartbreaking, but also comforting.

“How is your father?” I ask her as I pass a box to Kyrio. He takes it, stacking it into the truck’s tray. “He’s okay, he’s thinking of moving in with Kelsey. I’m just glad he’s finally moving on,” she tells me, and I nod.

“That will free up your time a little or are you planning on leaving, too?” I ask her.

She shakes her head.“No, I have the shop. And I don’t want to leave here, not even the packs are safe these days,” she sighs, and I glance at her.

“What do you mean?” I ask her.

“Oh, you haven’t heard?” she asks, and I stare at her blankly before looking at Kyrio who shrugs.

“Nightstar Pack was attacked the same night you took down Wildbane pack,” Amanda tells me. I glance at Kyrio who moves closer to listen.

“Council put out an alert, I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it. Rumors were getting around that after you killed Alpha Michael and his Luna that your pack attacked Nightstar,” she tells me.

Now this is news to me, making me wonder why the council didn’t mention it. “Wasn’t us, we have no reason to go after them,” I remind her.

She nods.“Yeah, everyone knows that. But that is the alert that was put out on the night. Apparently Alpha Callum went on a rampage after his daughter was chosen at the annual ceremony when she didn’t return home.

Alpha Callum sent his men out, and they attacked the Nightstar pack, and killed two of Alpha Farren’s best warriors.

Alpha Callum claims it wasn’t him, and that Elsie, his daughter, mysteriously showed up home the following day. ” She shrugs.

“Sounds mysterious,” I laugh. This drama with packs never ends. “Yeah, it is not half obvious who attacked his pack. Although I am shocked, they went back,” she adds.

“Alpha Callum did?” I ask her.

“That is what the council has been saying, but I think it’s more than that. He had his daughter back and there was no reason for him to return, but when the council went out to speak with Alpha Farren, he was found dead alongside his Beta and mother,” she tells me.

“Alpha Farren is dead?” I ask, shocked. He was one of the packs we were in alliance with, also the pack that helped us track down the rogues responsible for attacking my pack when we found out they were ordered by Alpha Micheal.

“Now that is odd,” I state and it makes no sense as to why Callum would go back there having retrieved his daughter already.

“Yep, well, Alpha Callum’s pack is under investigation because apparently once he retrieved his daughter back, the second attack was without cause,” Amanda tells me.

“Or maybe Alpha Callum killed him when he got his daughter back,” Kyrio offers, which is a good point, but Amanda shakes her head.

“No, it was after Callum and his men left. Farren is the one who put in a complaint to the council that Callum was breaking pack laws and demanded the council force Callum to bring his daughter back.”

“Well, if you hear anything more, let us know. We’ve been black marked by the council now, so chances are the next lot of rumors will be about our pack,” I tell her.

“There are already plenty of those going around, but most are just relieved they don’t have to worry about Alpha Michael lingering around their borders anymore,” she tells me, which is true.

Everyone knew who he was and what he traded in, but withou t proof and him having the council in his pocket, nothing could be done.

I sigh heavily, glancing in the back of the truck making sure Emery isn’t eavesdropping when I notice she is gone.

Ripping the rear door open, I find her bags, but she is gone.

I could have sworn I saw her climb into the truck.

“Where is Emery?” I ask, looking at Kyrio who curses before jumping off the back of the truck bed.

With a growl, I race back toward the store and rip open the door.

Her scent instantly hits me, and I peer around to see her bend down and grab the last box.

Relief hits me and I move toward her and take the last box from her.

“I thought I told you to stay in the car?” I tell her just as the bell sounds and Amanda walks in. “I wanted to help,” she says, and I watch her for a second, noticing the underlying smell of fear to her scent.

“Ah, you found her,” Amanda says, looking just as relieved. “Stressing for nothing,” she adds, swatting my arm.

“Thanks for your help,” Emery tells her.

Amanda moves toward her register. “Any time, dear.”

Emery quickly leaves, Kyrio is quick to grab her the moment she steps out the door and marches her back to the truck.

“Thanks again, Amanda,” I call out to her, and she waves to me. “I’ll let you know if I hear anything,” she tells me, and I push the door open.

“I could have sworn I put this on charge,” she says, making me stop, I peer back at her to see her holding the store phone.

She shakes her head, and I raise an eyebrow at her.

“Oh, it’s nothing, the phone was dying. I thought I put it back on the dock.

Seems I need another coffee,” she laughs, walking out the back.

Walking back to the truck, I pass the last box to Kyrio before helping him secure the load. Once that is done, I climb back in the truck, only this time in the front while Emery sits in the back.

The drive back home is longer than expected, having to stop by a few places. On the last stretch, though, Emery falls asleep in the back, and I turn to Kyrio.

“Don’t suppose Doc has got her blood test results back?” I ask him.

“He hasn’t mentioned it, but I will ask when we arrive home. Are you worried because she never shifted?” Kyrio asks me, and I nod slowly, keeping my gaze out the window. My wolf wants to mate and mark her, however, doing so before she shifts will probably kill her.

“Have you told her about Trinity?” he asks, and I shake my head.

“She still hates me. I know she won’t believe me, and I have no way to prove what I say is true,” I remind him when my phone buzzes indicating a message has come in. Peering down, I see it is Amanda.

‘Um did you make a call from my phone? I went to call my supplier back yet when I hit redial, it was a woman who answered?’

I peer down at the number she provided at the bottom. It isn’t one I recognize.

‘Wasn’t me, I have a mobile,’

A few seconds later she messages back just as it hits me at the same second.

‘Might have been Emery, all good was wondering who it was is all.’ Amanda replies.

“What’s wrong?” Kyrio asks, nudging me as I scroll back to the number up top.

I dial the number, listening to it ring. The phone rings out and goes to an answering machine, and I instantly recognize the voice.

Emery’s grandmother.

“Well?” Kyrio asks as I grip the mirror, turning it, so I can see in the back. Emery is fast asleep, and part of me wants to demand why she lied and went behind my back to call her grandmother. All while my wolf reminds me that she did ask to borrow my phone to check on her brother.

“Nothing, I will deal with her later,” I tell him and his brows furrow, but he doesn’t question me on it.
