“So what are y’all doing after homecoming?” Yaseer questioned.
“I know she wanted to go to an afterparty and I’m down to do whatever she wants to do.”
“Except sex unless you want me to knock your…”
“Yaseer,” I nudged him.
“I’d like to formally introduce my granddaughter, Amill Yasmeen Haynes,” Vicky sang from the top of the stairs, snatching our attention.
Amill came into view at the top of the stairs, garnering everyone’s undivided attention.
Her blush pink homecoming dress hugged her curves perfectly, and the soft fabric caught the light with every step she took.
Her makeup was flawless, and I loved the light dash of blush at the tip of her nose.
She descended the stairs with her right hand gripping the railing. Amill was giving royalty tonight.
“You look amazing, baby girl,” Yaseer complimented.
“Absolutely breathtaking,” I added.
Freddy grabbed her hand and helped her off the last step. “It’s your job to cater to her for the rest of the evening.”
“Yes sir.” Tyler jumped into action, rushing over to grab Amill’s hand. He lifted it like a delicate flower and planted a kiss on Amill’s hand before releasing his grip. Tyler’s nerves were getting the best of him as he fumbled with the clear plastic container that housed the corsage.
“You look amazing,” he complimented, trying his best to hide the nerves.
“Thanks, you look great too.”
“Relax jit,” Yaseer encouraged.
I gently rubbed my hands up and down his back, proud of him for not jumping down his throat like I’m positive he wanted to.
The tension was evident in his shoulders, but I’d work all of that out of him later.
Tyler finally lifted the corsage out of the box and Freddy reached for the box to dispose of it.
“Wait! Let me get a few pictures of him putting the corsage on,” I cut in, rushing back into the living room where I left my camera earlier. When I ran back, I immediately bent down a little next to them to get a good angle. “Okay. I’m ready.”
I snapped pictures while Tyler slid the blush-toned flowers onto her wrist. They were both nervous because now that the corsage was on her wrist, the petals trembled slightly. Amill was showing all of her pearly white teeth.
“Alright, let me get a few pictures of you guys together. The stairs are a perfect backdrop,” I suggested.
Like a pair of naturals, Amill and Tyler posed for the camera. Everyone had their phones out snapping pictures until we led them outside for more pictures in front of the Camaro Tyler pulled up in.
“The photoshoot has been amazing but we are taking off,” Amill announced, officially over it all and ready to go.
“Soooooo the curfew tonight,” Amill faltered, her eyes landing directly on me.
Yaseer snapped his fingers and Wayne opened the door to his truck.
Wayne stepped out of Yaseer’s truck as he started speaking. “I hear you wanted a two a.m. curfew. The best I can do is one a.m. and there will be no stops at hotels. And my driver is going to make sure that rules are followed.”
“Dad!” Amill whined.
“Yaseer,” I pulled on is tank top.
He leaned down and whispered in my ear. “Don’t Yaseer me. I shot at your husband, remember? Wayne takes her or her ass can stay here all night.”
“Amill, I think this is a great compromise. Time is steady ticking, the longer you stand here whining the less time you and Tyler have out together.” I urged.
“Traitor,” she turned her nose up and clacked her way over to the truck where Wayne was waiting to help them inside.
“I promise to take good care of her and have her back before curfew,” Tyler assured us.
“See, he seems like a decent kid,” I grinned, watching them pull off.
“I liked him,” Vicky affirmed. “I hear you have two boys of your own, Marissa. Room for any more kids in your future?”
My body instantly tensed up, and I hoped my face wasn’t betraying me.
“We have plenty of time to think about something like that.”
“The look on her face says otherwise,” Vicky pointed out, letting me know that I was failing miserably.
Yaseer looked down at me. The disappointment was etched on his face. “They are barely together, Vicky, and you over here asking about a kid. Can we at least get to know her over dinner first?”
“As y’all can see we are already in pajamas. It’s been a long day, we can order something, but we are in for the night.”
“That works. We will be taking up residence here for a few days because there is a tropical storm about to blow through Miami, and I’m not trying to be down there when it does. Order something good while we take a shower,” Freddy requested, holding his wife’s hand.
They led the way back into the house, and I mentally prepared myself for the conversation I knew Yaseer would want to have once we were alone. I guess this was one of those age gap struggles we’d be facing early on.
“You don’t want kids?” He wondered once we were alone in the kitchen.
“I have the unfortunate pleasure of going through perimenopause,” I confided in him as I poured more champagne into a fresh flute.
“Already at 43?” He queried, scrolling through his phone to look for somewhere to order food.
“Yep,” I lamented, and he sat the phone down giving me his undivided attention. “As much as I would’ve loved to have a daughter of my own, it clearly isn’t happening. Hence why I love being able to help Amill today. I always dreamed of doing these things with my own daughter.”
“Well, I think we do a good job with Amill. I’ll share her with you forever and always. She loves you,” he insisted.
“I love her too.”
“Are kids a dealbreaker for you?”
“Nah, my only dealbreaker is you,” he flirted, coming around to my side of the island where I was sitting on a high-back stool.
His strong arms slid around my chest, holding me close.
I relaxed in his embrace, happy that the conversation had gone the way it did.
“Actually, I do have a dealbreaker now that I got you in my arms,” he clarified, nibbling on my ear.
“You’re going to be my wife as soon as you divorce that fuck nigga. Would you consider getting married again?”
“Only if it’s you. I wanted to be one of those women who spent a few years focusing on myself after my divorce, but then you came along.”
“I love you, Marissa.” The words rolling off his tongue shocked me, but the feeling was definitely mutual.
“I fell harder for you when you opened up to me about your childhood and helped me see things with my daughter from a whole other perspective. Watching you get along with my family is some shit I didn’t even realize I needed until I witnessed it, and I can’t lose that.
You make me feel some shit I ain’t felt since I was a teenager.
I been feeling it since you pulled up on me ready to throw hands about Quincy.
When you finalize that divorce, don’t even change your last name back, we just gone make it mine. ”
He ended his statement with a kiss to my cheek. I reached back and pulled him to the side of me so I could kiss him again. My tongue danced around in his mouth, hoping to convey the feelings I was too afraid to voice.
“Get a room,” Vicky’s voice sounded a few steps away, bringing us back down to earth.
“I mean, I did pay for every room in this motha fucka, so I guess I have six. Y’all the ones that don’t belong here.”
“Boy hush, did you order something to eat or were you too busy trying to eat Marissa’s face?”
I giggled, beyond embarrassed. “I was too busy eating Marissa’s face,” he notified her before swirling his thick tongue around my lips like he loved to do my clit.
“Ewww, Yaseer!” She chastised him.
“Alright, now I can order some food. I’m just going to have food from Koto delivered. Is filet mignon and lobster good with everybody?”
“Perfect,” I cooed, still eyeing Yaseer.
“Oh lord, we are in a love nest. I do not want to hear y’all having sex in here,” Freddy joked, entering the living room.
“Man, y’all cockblocking harder than Amill,” he groaned.
“Just order the food. We are going back upstairs to lay down until the food comes. That drive was longer than usual on a Saturday. We would’ve drove up yesterday if we knew the roads would be disastrous today too,” Vicky complained, leading Freddy back up the stairs.
This was going to be an eventful evening with Yaseer’s parents.
