CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Marissa Bentley
A fter that blissful day at Yaseer’s house, we saw each other daily.
Amill hit it off with Jameera at the Fall Ball game and they exchanged numbers.
She came over to my house twice this week while her dad was at work to hang with Lil Q and Jameera.
I was thankful that Lil Q was cool with Yaseer because I couldn’t, in good faith, date him if it truly upset my sons.
Today it was Amill’s turn to attend homecoming, and I cleared my schedule to treat her to a spa day.
I knew what it was like to experience these types of events without my mother, and in the midst of the joyous occasion, grief would always sneak in.
Getting to know Amill was also heartwarming.
Yaseer had an amazing daughter on his hands.
We laid on the tables silently enjoying our massages until Amill started talking.
“So Marissa,” she started, and I knew her ass was about to hit me with something to get me in trouble by her tone.
“Yes,” I turned to face her.
“There is a party after homecoming that I really want to go to. I’ve had a strict midnight curfew since last year. I feel like I should be extended a little more grace on nights like this. Especially when Lil Q and Jameera told me they got a hotel room and didn’t come home that night.”
“I uhhhh,” I faltered. “How long are you trying to stay out until?”
“I don’t know. Maybe two at least. Homecoming is over at eleven. That’s literally only enough time for us to come straight home. What about two? I can get to the party and stay for an hour, maybe an hour and a half, before I head home.”
“Amill, I know that Lil Q has a lot of freedom, but he was just raised differently. I’ll mention something to Yaseer, but I can’t make any promises. I don’t want to be in the middle,” I laughed.
“He’s just so strict. I never do anything I shouldn’t and I feel like I deserve a little grace.
That’s why I want to move away when I graduate.
He will not be breathing down my neck until I’m twenty-five.
I know that’s his plan, I can feel it,” she vented, and I couldn’t help but laugh at her animated ass.
“Jameera was telling me about her aunt offering her and a friend an internship in Tokyo. I love shoes, and you see how I dress. The fits are always giving. I could see myself doing something in fashion, but when I brought up the idea of going he shot me down.”
“I know it has to be frustrating, but Yaseer is coming from a place of love. With that said, I hear you, and I’m going to try to help Yaseer see your side if you promise not to do anything stupid.
I couldn’t imagine getting him to extend your time tonight, and you go out here and do anything crazy. ”
“I won’t. I promise,” Amill assured me as the timer in the room sounded off.
“You ladies are all done.” My masseuse announced, releasing the grip he had on my lower back.
“I hope you have an amazing time at homecoming tonight,” Amill’s masseuse bubbled.
“Thank you.”
We took a minute to exit the massage room and head to the changing rooms to put our clothes back on. I indulged in a final glass of wine while putting my clothes on. We already got facials and pedicures before the massage, so I was feeling refreshed.
Wayne already had the truck pulled up to the entrance of the Marriott, ready to take us back to Yaseer’s house. While on the way, the makeup artists I booked for the day confirmed that she would be headed our way in thirty minutes. We had a ten minute drive and were running behind schedule.
“The makeup artist is going to be on time, she just texted me. As soon as we get there you have to get into the shower so you can be ready to get your makeup done.”
“Okay. While I shower and stuff, can you make sure you go work your magic on my dad?” she urged.
I chuckled. “Your dad isn’t home yet, but I’ll talk to him as soon as he gets there. He’s still at the office, but he said we can send Wayne to grab him as soon as we get back to the house.” I informed her after reading his text message.
“That’s cool. I’d prefer your assistance anyways,” Amill announced. “My dad isn’t nearly as much fun as you are. I’m happy he found you.”
“I’m happy he found me too,” I bubbled.
We pulled into the driveway a few minutes later and sat idly waiting for the iron gates to grant us entry.
When we were finally in the driveway, Wayne graciously opened the door for us.
I promise I could get used to this. Sauntering up to the house, Amill keyed in her code and the door beeped twice before she opened it.
“I’m getting in the shower,” she announced, taking off to the bedroom.
I went into the living room and placed my Prada purse on the coffee table before relaxing on the plush sofas.
Every time I sat on them, I never wanted to get up.
They felt like you were wrapped in a hug from a cloud.
Pairing the sofas with the view of the open water, this was my second favorite spot in the house.
My first was Yaseer’s bedroom where he fucked me while overlooking the water.
A call from the makeup artists quickly pulled me away from the place of comfort I’d fallen into.
“Hello.”
“Hey, I’m at the address but the gate is closed,” an angelic voice greeted me.
“Okay, give me one second.”
I rushed upstairs and knocked on Amill’s door. “Can you open the gate? The makeup artist is here.”
“I’m opening it now. As much as you are here, Dad needs to give you access,” she shouted back.
I went back downstairs and opened the door to greet the makeup artist. “Hi, I’m Vella. It’s nice to meet you,” she greeted me with a smile.
“It’s nice to meet you too. Jameera referred me to you. She said you do her makeup for everything, and you work wonders on brown skinned girls.”
“I do,” she celebrated.
“Perfect. We want something along the lines of your Barbie glam looks you do. They will match her dress perfectly. You can set up in the dining room,” I instructed, leading her to the area.
“I got you,” she nodded.
Amill descended the stairs with a robe on a few minutes later. The smell of whatever she used to lotion her body preceded her, and it smelled amazing.
“Hey beautiful. My name is Vella and I’m going to be bringing all of your beautiful features to life today.”
Amill excitedly claimed her seat and I left them alone to get started.
I used the bathroom and got into the shower because I wasn’t leaving tonight.
My body was exhausted after getting up this morning and accompanying Amill to all of her appointments before we went to the spa.
We were out since eight o’clock this morning.
When I got out of the shower, I dressed in a pajama set and slid a pair of slippers on my feet before calling Lil Q and Quincy’s phones, which went straight to voicemail.
A text from Quincy immediately came through in the group chat seconds later.
Quincy: You good ma? We out watching the football game. It’s loud in here.
Me: I’m good. I just wanted to check in. I haven’t heard from y’all all day.
Lil Q: We good. I knew you were going to be busy with Amill, so I’m staying at Quincy’s place tonight.
Me: That’s where you better be.
I slid my phone into the pocket of my robe and went back downstairs. The front door opened, and Yaseer’s snarl filled the house before I could make it to the last step.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting my makeup done,” Amill replied.
“What’s going on?” I yelped, rushing into the dining room.
Vella stood with the concealer and beauty blender in hand.
“I’ve never let Amill get her makeup done. I told her we could do prom. It’s not necessary for homecoming. You don’t need all of that extra stuff,” he chastised her.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know. I booked the makeup artist for her when she said Jameera’s makeup was cute for homecoming. This is on me,” I clarified. “I should’ve asked before assuming.”
“Amill knows better, she ain’t slick.”
“Do you see what I mean, Marissa? He is so strict and overbearing. What is a little makeup going to hurt? I’m eighteen. You won’t be able to control my life forever,” Amill lashed out.
“Okay, everybody let’s just calm down,” I raised my hands, stepping in the middle of them.
“I’m sorry, Vella. Can you give us a minute?”
Vella nodded, placing the items on the table before scurrying out.
“Yaseer, this is on me. I should’ve asked you.
Most girls get their makeup done for homecoming.
I truly don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
I can show you the look she is going for.
It’s not super dramatic and it’s age appropriate.
” I clicked around on my phone until I found Vella’s Instagram account.
Yaseer took the phone and examined it. I softened my face hoping to lighten the mood. “I’m sorry for snapping like that, Amill. I don’t want to ruin your night. The makeup is fine,” Yaseer apologized.
“Really?” Amill gasped.
“Don’t get cute because I can change my mind.”
“Nope, I’m good. Thanks, Daddy,” she grinned. “Vella, come on before he starts tripping again.”
I gripped Yaseer’s hand and led him out of the dining room as Vella came back in. My feet didn’t stop moving until we were in the privacy of the bedroom with the door closed behind us.
“Yaseer, I’d never question your parenting in front of Marissa, but you have got to relax on her.”
“I’m just on edge about everything. She’s going to leave my house with some lil nigga that asked her to the dance in a little bit.”
“Well, you better learn to be nice if you want me to reintroduce your dick to my tonsils tonight. I know how it feels to be the parent of the boy, don’t make this boy’s parents not like you, like I don’t like Jameera’s uncle.”
“I won’t,” he promised, loosening his tie and yanking it off.
“Let me help you,” I urged, easing up behind him.
