Carefully, she dragged walls of the land around each wolf, isolating them in high cells that they couldn’t jump over, which only left her with one challenge. Kin could fly even without turning into his beast form. He was using the flames on the balls of his feet to get to her even as she threw wall after wall of water at him.
“Ready for our pissed off kitsune.” Louisa’s voice came through her head like a whisper.
Relief washed through Rowan and she shot towards the sky to get back to the vampiress as quickly as possible. The pain of her wounds knifed through her as she came upon the sight of her friend who was trying to catch her breath inside a blood circle.
The nut had used her own blood to map out the spell’s intricacies perfectly. The woman never failed to impress with her precision.
Rowan landed at Louisa’s side, wrapped a steadying arm around her shoulders and phased out moments before Kin landed in the circle. She heard Louisa murmur the activation words before a huge water bubble ensnared Kin.
They both held their breath as the torrents swirled him violently until his red eyes rolled to the back of his head, the flames on his feet extinguished, and the prison drew still.
Relieved, Rowan let out a shaky breath. It was short-lived as the sound of a familiar growl came from her side. She slowly turned her head, registering the bloodshot eyes and the elongated fangs too late. Louisa’s teeth sunk into her neck.
Damn. She had fucked up. She was so tired, sore and wounded that she couldn’t get a proper grip to get the vampiress off.
The energy that Alessandro had given her was endless, but as a half-succubus, she needed food and sleep to use it to its full potential.
Rowan traced a shaking, bloody finger on Louisa’s exposed forearm. It took a moment for the rune to grip the vampiress and knock her out.
Woozy with blood loss, Rowan collapsed with the addition of her friend’s unconscious weight to the debris filled street.
As they fell, so did the spell Louisa had erected to contain Kin, depositing the fox shifter right next to them.
As she had time to catch her breath, she allowed the magic to target the injuries she could take care of without a trip to her sister, noting that she really needed to brush up on battlefield first aid.
A slight groan caught her attention, and Rowan eyed Kin as he stirred to consciousness. Instead of the rabid kitsune she had been fighting, the golden eyed man stared back at her, horrified.
“It’s okay.” Rowan reassured as he looked them over while he scooped Louisa from on top of her.
She sat up on the cusp of her second wind. His face lost more and more color as he took in the bloody mess they both were. “We’re going to be okay. I just need a second to catch my breath.”
He gave a curt nod and then his eyes zeroed in on the still healing slash of her abdomen. “Ro.” He gasped.
“It wasn’t you. It was the wolves.” She reassured him. “I need to get to the people. The witches were doing more harm than good last time I saw them. I need to make sure they’re protected.” He looked like he wanted to argue, but she narrowed her eyes. “You’re a liability. I don’t know what triggered your beast, but you’re the only real threat to me here. Get Louisa to Rosario. I’ll take care of getting this cleaned up.”
Kin cursed before finally doing as she asked.
Chapter 9
Rowan hissed as she stood back to her full height. Even with the help of her magic and Alessandro’s pills, she wasn’t healing as quickly as she wanted. She needed to figure out how to deal withthe wolves and get to her sister in the Eastern Elven Kingdom as quickly as possible.
She squared her shoulders as she rose to fly back over the scene. It wasn’t long before a black-haired witch with a silver goatee floated up to meet her. The rest of the witches were working on healing wounded civilians. As she passed some, she noted the witches looked a bit dazed and confused.
She clenched her jaw, not sure how to take their sudden interest in the wellbeing of the survivors.
“You are Rowan Dahl?” He asked, as he looked her over.
Years of avoiding using the full extent of her magic made her jumpy about being up in the air with a member of the Coven beside her.
“I am.” She answered with her head held high even though all she wanted to do was crawl back in bed and lick her wounds.
“I’m Dae Kang, current Head of the Mediterranean Chapter of the Coven. Great job containing the wolves and sorry we couldn’t be of more help. My A team is with the Elder in Brazil. We weren’t ready for four breakouts at once.”
“Four?” She furrowed her eyebrows together.
Rowan didn’t miss the confusion on Dae’s face. “Yes, Greece, Brazil, Egypt and Canada are all currently facing something like this. The dragons are tidying up the bear shifters in Canada. The Elder is in Brazil with the Snake shifters and the Atlanteans are in Egypt with the sphinxes.”
What the hell had happened to the world while she had been asleep? Rowan shook her head and opted to concentrate on the one thing she could control. Helping the wolves turn back to sanity.
