Story: Violent Little Thing

Adonis: That’s the last thing I think when I look at you, menace

Me: Well your face didn’t get the memo. You looked scared when I left you in the waiting room

Adonis: Nothing gets past you, does it?

The question makes my brain lag for a moment. Did Adonis just admit he was scared before my tests? Come to think of it, he’d been jumpy all morning. He didn’t touch the coffee Ms. Agnes set in front of him. And it’s a good thing becausehis energy was already on ten. The man paced the kitchen no less than fifteen times while I ate breakfast.

If he weren’t my kidnapper, it would have almost been endearing seeing him stressed.Almost.

Unbidden, a smile creeps onto my face as I watch the medical staff walk by my room.

Me: It’s freezing back here

I don’t know why I’m still texting him. I have nothing new to say, but ever since the EEG ended and I was shuttled off to this ice cube of a room, the quiet has been too much.

The phone vibrates against my palm, pulling me back to our exchange.

Adonis: You can have my jacket when you come out

Me: That’s something Victor would say. You know, sometimes I think you’re a gentleman.

Adonis: I am a gentleman.

Me:

Adonis: Have you worn Victor’s jacket?

Me: Why?

Adonis: Answer me, Delilah

Me: Does it matter?

Adonis: I wouldn’t be asking if it didn’t

Me: Where is Victor, by the way? I haven’t seen him all morning

Adonis: Enjoying a day off. It’s me and you today

Me:

Adonis: Admit it, Delilah. We’re at least friends

Me: Not right now, Adonis. I’m going through enough

Adonis: Back to my question

Me: Hold that thought, the doctor is here. Text you in a minute.

A few minutes later, I pick up the phone to update him and smirk at the last ellipses he gave me.

Me: The doctor says he doesn’t usually do same-day results but if we leave for lunch for a few hours, he’ll have them ready when we get back

Adonis: What do you want to eat?

Me: I don’t know

Adonis: Do you like sushi?
