I was too stunned to do anything but blink at him. Noticing my dumbstruck expression, Fallon signed,
“I’m coming with you.”
“No,” I argued. “You need to stay with Addie. She needs you.”
At the mention of her name, his entire demeanor changed and tightened. His eyes flared violently.
“I know she needs me.” He ran a hand through his hair once more. “But she would never forgive herself if anything happened to her brother. We’re going to get him and bring him back to her. She would want to see him when she wakes up.”
The way he spoke…
It had only just occurred to me that he didn’t perceive a future without Adelaide in it. That scenario just wasn’t plausible in his mind. I had the distinct feeling that if something were to happen, he would live the rest of his life in denial.
The unfeeling icy asshole loved her.
He loved her just as fiercely as I did. As Calax did. As we all did. He would be willing to die for her, be willing to sacrifice us for her.
There was no changing his mind once he got like this. Addie was his world, and if he needed to save her brother to feel useful, then he would. We were a team. All of us. Live or die together.
And Sarge had chosen death.
Without another word, I put the car into drive.
