Story: The Real Deal
“You got it.”
Riggs then looked at his father. “How soon can we get in the air?”
“Wait, what did that mean?”
“Just what it said. She promised she’d contact me if and when she needed me.”
“Needed you to what, son?”
“Save her.”
“That’s all I needed to know,” Russell responded. “We can be in Boston by four at the latest, would be my guess.”
“And your flyers?” Riggs asked Naomie.
“We don’t need them.”
That surprised him. “Why?”
“Because the sender’s location hasn’t changed. Wherever that device is, you’ll find Georgie. We just need to pinpoint it against a current map of the area and you’ll have the address.”
“Then let’s go get our girl.”
Chapter Twenty-Four
Georgie heard the front door, shoved the iPad into its hiding place, and raced to the bedroom. She posed herself in front of the mirror mounted on the closet door. A second later, she heard Josh.
"Daddy's home. Where's my baby girl?"
"In here," she called out in a higher-than-normal voice. He wanted her to sound like a ten or eleven-year-old girl.
She watched the doorway, and a moment later, he appeared. Josh stopped and looked at her. "Well, this is a surprise."
"You said you like the way I look in this outfit," she feigned shyness and looked down as she spoke. "I wanted to look pretty for you."
"Well, you succeeded. Now, come over here and give Daddy a kiss."
Georgie turned and walked slowly to him. Just as she stopped in front of him, a faint chime sounded. Both of them froze. Him with an immediate expression of suspicion and her in fear.
Oh, God, I forgot to turn it off.
Fear hit like a bullet, slamming into her with near-tangible force. Inside her head, she pleaded, please don't let him find it. Please, please.
"What was that?"
"What?" She tried to sound normal but wasn't sure she hit the mark. Fear-induced nausea bubbled in her belly.
"That noise."
"I didn't hear a noise."
"Well, I did." He turned and stepped outside the room, stopped, and listened. "Are you sure you don't know what that was?"
"No," she responded, and realizing her error, quickly added. "I meant, no, sir."
"Well, we'll see, won't we?" He turned and held out a hand. "Come here."
A sinking feeling took hold in her gut. What was he up to? There's no way he could know about the iPad. She'd been too careful. Well, until today. But surely she turned it off. Didn't she?
