Story: The Prince of Power
Kane frowns in question.
“For the airport. I can’t fly without my ID.”
“Oh.” He smiles faintly, shaking his head. “You won’t need it. You’ll be on a private plane.”
A private plane. Of course.
This is good. A private plane will get me there much sooner. I won’t have to go through airport security.
“Let’s go now,” Kane says. “Don’t worry about changing out of your pajamas. It’s too urgent.”
I nod and follow him out of the room. He moves fast. Too fast for my frantic mind. I follow him through a narrow hallway I don’t recognize, the path winding in a way that makes my head spin.
“I need to call my sister,” I say. “Can I use your phone?”
Kane nods. “In the car.”
My relief is short-lived, replaced by an itching anxiety. Once I call Violet, I’ll know. I’ll know how serious it really is.
In a matter of minutes, my world may change forever.
Tears rise to my eyes, and I take a deep breath to fight them. It’s irrational to give in to despair when I don’t know what’s happening yet.
When we finally make our way to the end of the hall, Kane yanks a metal door open and gestures for me to follow him.
It’s so dark I can barely see the car. I climb inside and snap my seat belt, wanting to scream at the dread of what’s ahead.
I want to be in the hospital now. And yet I don’t. Not ever. I don’t want my dad to be hurt or…worse.
Kane drives slowly at first. I’m just about to urge him to move faster when his foot suddenly slams on the gas.
My heart jumps into my throat. Why are his headlights off? I can barely see the road ahead, and he’s…
Oh Jesus. Something is wrong.
The speed of the car lurches me back into my seat. The engine roars against the silence of the night.
My pulse hammers in my throat. “Kane?—”
“Hush,” he clips out.
Nausea washes over me suddenly as he takes a sharp turn on the mountain. When he pulls around the bend, a brightness lights the road ahead of us. Another engine roars from behind. Is someone following us?
This isn’t right.
Why is Kane of all people taking me to the airport? He’s barely said a single word to me since I moved into the castle. Though I have seen him watching me…
Oh God.
I think I’ve been tricked.
“Fuck,” Kane mutters, and a moment later, he slams on the gas, lurching the car into an unimaginable speed.
I’m going to die. Jesus, help me, I’m going to die.
We’re being chased. And I know who is in that car behind us. I can’t look. I can’t move an inch, but I know.
Damian.
