Story: The Gods Only Know
Daphne heaved in a breath, narrowing her eyes at me. “I’m trying really hard to be mad at you for that.”
“Yeah? How’s that working out for you?”
She pinched my bicep, then laid her hand back down flat against my suit. “I’m working on it.”
I laughed loud enough to startle one of our guards. “We’ll get through this. For an hour. Then I maintain the right to drag you out of here.”
“An hour seems reasonable.”
“Well, shit. If you agree, then I’m definitely doing it.”
Daphne had all the good ideas. And pulling her away from our wedding reception so that we couldfinallybe alone seemed like a good idea.
Even though we’d spent the morning together, then in bed after the small ceremony, I still wasn’t settled.
Daphne was mywife. Twice over now, after the ridiculous ceremony we suffered through this afternoon. How anyone expected me to act normal was beyond me.
I pulled my wife closer to me, dropping a quick kiss down on her head before nodding at our guards. It was time to get this over with.
As soon as the doors opened, the crowd erupted. Humans and gods alike staring at us.
Not even Reyna Romulus got this reaction. I didn’t even want to think about the type of attention her wedding would command.
I could feel Daphne tense slightly next to me, forever feeling the pressure of impressing crowds. I held her tighter, hoping she understood that I’d anchor her through it all. Through everything.
The second we stepped through, people descended on us like sharks to blood, peppering us with congratulations and questions. Our friends—the gods—stayed back until the crowd got their fill, walking over to us to offer their own words.
“You happy?” Dominic asked me, pulling me in for a clap on the back.
“Very,” I said, looking at Daphne while I spoke.
Rose let out something of a squeal, hugging us both and placing smacking kisses on our cheeks.
Corinna Aphrodite almost passed out from happiness. She could sense people's true romantic feelings and was apparently feeling a little overwhelmed in the face of true love. Her words, not mine. Even if I agreed with them.
Quinn and Lia promised to make us medals for our suffering, laughing all the way through Daphne’s recounting of my grumbling.
Adrian kept his congratulations to a nod and the raise of his glass across the room, appearing from behind a column. After taking a sip from the glass he’d raised in our honor, Daphne and I watched as he cut purposefully through the crowd.
Heads turned as he moved toward his target. By the time he reached his destination, every eye in the room was on him.
Watching as he stopped in front of Reyna, placed a glass of champagne in one hand, and lifted the other to place a lingering kiss on her knuckles.
A clap of thunder sounded in the distance, as loud as the silence that had torn through the room.
