The Rider’s eyes twinkled. ‘So I should respect them?’

‘You shouldfokkin’ revere them,’ Élisa growled at him. ‘They can turn from soft plumes to razor-sharp sabers in seconds.’

He chuckled at her fierceness, stroking one of them with care as she purred against him before his eyes returned to the horizon.

A burst of color across the firmament caught his eye. ‘What’s that?’

‘It’s the nebula’s aurora. It dominates the sky to the south. Its coloration has become wilder in recent months. Killen says it portends a reckoning.’

‘Let’s not think of that right now,’ Riv murmured. ‘For now, let’s live in this stunning moment we’ve been gifted.’

Élisa leaned back with a sigh. ‘You always spoke like a sage old man, Sable.’

‘And you adored me for it.’
