“We canceled that contract,” Gage interrupted me coolly. “Effective yesterday.”
I stopped cold. For a few long seconds, his words didn’t register.
“He’s right,” Devyn cut in. “This last mission was also our final operation. We decided this over in Somalia, before we even came back. At a certain point you have to stop rolling the dice, Jules. Eventually, you lose.”
I saw him absently fingering the dog-tag around his neck. Perhaps wondering how things could’ve been different, but weren’t.
“There are still terms to discuss, and roles we can fill,” Devyn added. “But none of them will involve going away. None of them will involve taking us away from here… or more importantly, fromyou.”
For a while I could only stand there, trying to soak up everything they were telling me. Eventually I shook my head. It just didn’t seem real.
“But this job is yourlife,” I pleaded. “This is what you do.”
“No,” Maverick corrected me gently. “It’s what wedid. For ten long years, which is more than most.”
Silence descended. I had to be sure.
“Just like that, you’d give it all up?” I was still incredulous. “You’d really do that for me?”
“We’d do it forallof us,” Devyn answered. His eyes dropped to my belly. “And for him.”
“Or her,” I croaked.
The handsome face I’d fallen in love with over a computer monitor grinned back at me. “Or her.”
Gage was smiling too, and now he stared down at me from two glassy eyes of his own. “You’reour life now,” he chimed in. “You and the baby we’ll raise together.”
The words choked me up all over again. I just couldn’t believe them. Or maybe, I wouldn’t believe them.
In my heart of hearts though, I knew they were the truth.
“You sure you’re ready to be our girl?” Devyn finally teased. “It comes with certain… responsibilities.”
I sniffed again, wiping away my tears as I let out a laugh.
“Why, are there tryouts?”
He shrugged. “Could be.”
“Sounds right up my alley.”
The heat of their bodies was making me hornier than ever, and that’s because they’d inched even closer on all sides. The idea of having all three of them again was wildly exciting. I’d been fantasizing about it for weeks, and now it was finally going to happen.
“Wanna take me home?” I murmured, smiling wickedly. “Try out this shared girlfriend thing?”
“Maybe put you through the paces?” asked Devyn.
“Or I could putyouthrough the paces,” I replied, adding a wink. “One… by one… by one.”
“Damn,” Gage shifted where he stood. “You really are insatiable.”
I extended my arm, staring down at my tattoo that read ‘invincible.’
“Maybe I’ll put that one on myotherarm,” I teased.
