And even if I had long ago accepted that it would be that way for us from now on, it didn’t mean I didn’t feel a pinch in my heart whenever I thought about her.

Laughter rang out from somewhere in the house, drawing me out of my memory and back to the present.

I smiled as their laughter got louder.

Massimo was a great father.

He was everything I thought he would be and so much more.

Quickly, I got out of bed and dressed. Then I walked out and made my way to my family.

Massimo saw me first.

His eyes glinted with that familiar expression that told me he loved me, even without the words.

Then Dante, my oldest, saw me.

“Mom!” he yelled, rushing over to me. His younger brother, Maximo, followed close behind. I soon found myself surrounded. Massimo came over then and wrapped his arms around me.

I looked at my family.

This was enough, I thought.

It was more than enough.

It was my happily ever after.
