Story: Remorseless Sinner
All the fears and sounds I couldn’t make came crashing down on me, and I felt about to burst into noisy hysterics. After taking a swift check of Lottie, even though he knew we hadn’t been touched, Saul moved up to me.
Two dark, furious eyes met mine, and, so swiftly Lottie couldn’t see, he reached a hand behind and curled his fingers around my scalp and pulled my hair in a sharp, angry motion.
I gulped air into my lungs, the weak hysterics melting away under the familiar taste and feel of my husband’s dominance.
“Put yourself in danger like that again and you won’t be able to sit down for a week!” he hissed in my ear.
My breath hitched and I gasped in relief.
“Yes, Saul! I promise. I love you. Oh, I love you so much. You saved me.”
“Fuck this place,” he snorted, striding over suddenly and taking hold of one of the broken Eyes, crushing the metal in his grip.
“There’s nothing for us here. Let’s find a new spot to picnic.”
And I realized that it was true.
Nothing was here but blood and vengeance and it was time to move on.
Maybe the world wasn’t encircled by Nimhe, the Great Serpent, butmyworld was encircled by my husband. And it wasn’t the Eye that watched me, but my husband’s eyes, always sharp to protect and save, and that gave me a greater sense of safety and joy than I’d ever known before.
