“Lead the way to the lobsters,” Abigail says in a choked voice.
I shake my head. What the fuck ever.
If going along with Abigail tonight puts a smile on her face, then I’ll put up with it. Whatever she wants, it will be worth it.
With that, the zen I was searching for settles over me, and I follow the pair of them to where our unsuspecting dinner awaits.
Chapter Thirty-two
Abigail
I’m fuming.
Luke, on the other hand, seems confused but willing enough to go along with all the nonsense of the night.
The nonsense that took me several days of cajoling Darren’s partner into playing along at the restaurant he owns, and while I paid in advance for the private room, I know he’s still not thrilled with everything I have planned for tonight. Darren, on the other hand, was only too happy to play the part, because he’s always ready to participate in my brand of chicanery. Usually.
Luke, however, wasn’t supposed to be fine with all-out shenanigans.
How dare he be so patient and accommodating! It’s infuriating. He must really want whatever the stupid Aces owners promised him, and that thought makes me even more determined to make sure he doesn’t get it.
Asshole.
Big fake fucking asshole.
By the time we get to the part of the dining experience that Salt of the Sea is most famous for, I’m steaming. Absolutely livid with Luke Wolfe, who’s somehow kept his cool, for the most part, completely.
Well, I guess I’ll just have to up the stakes.
Gerard, a.k.a. Darren, pauses dramatically before throwing open the door to the room that houses the tanks. The aquariums.
I made sure that we would have privacy for this, because as much as I want to, eh, tank our relationship, I don’t want to drown my career in the process.
Just make Luke squirm like a worm on a hook.
Make him squirm until he’s forced to call it off between us out of sheer desperation to get away from my petty ass.
Emboldened, I toss my hair over my shoulder and saunter into the room. Massive aquariums provide the only light, and I don’t have to fake my delight at it. Delicate air bubbles make the water reflections dance along the ceiling, and colorful fish swim in schools.
“Have you heard anything about this?” I ask Luke, sure of his answer.
He grunts, and I hate that I know him well enough that I know it’s a no in Luke-shaped form. The light from the tanks paints him in deep blues and gray shadows, and he’s even more beautiful here.
“You’re in for a treat,” I trill.
“You’re all the treat I need,” he tells me.
Asshole.
Incredibly sweet fucking asshole.
Fuck!
“Gerard,” I say as sweetly as I can manage while I’m imagining wrapping my hands around Luke’s stupid neck, “I think I see the one I want for dinner.”
“Hold on,” Luke says, frowning at me. “This is where we pick the lobsters?”
I laugh, slapping him slightly harder than necessary on his shoulder. “Luke Wolfe, you aresucha joker.”
