Story: Possession
Suddenly, I hear a thump on the bathroom stall door. I must have pissed off the owner of the phone, that is until I hear someone shriek, “You can’t be in here, dude!”
“Wipe your ass and get out of there now!” Eddie’s voice booms over everyone else.
I abruptly end the call with Christian and toss the phone into the sanitary napkin waste bin, then flush the toilet for effect.
“You’re making a scene,” I say as I nonchalantly open the door.
“What the fuck were you doing in there?”
He looks inside the stall behind me.
“Taking a shit.”
The Good Samaritan whose phone I borrowed stares at the two of us with fear in her eyes and luckily says nothing as I quickly wash my hands and walk out of the bathroom with Eddie on my heels. I hope she discovers where I've hidden her phone.
“Where’s my food?” I ask him, noticing that he’s empty-handed.
“I told you what would happen if you took too long.”
“Well, I’m still hungry and I’m not sure that Mr. Fabre would approve of you starving a pregnant woman because you have trust issues with women.”
“You don’t know anything about what Fabre would approve of. If his precious daughter wasn’t here, we would have left your ass in an alleyway somewhere a long time ago.”
A chill runs down my spine.
Because I'm leaning towards actually believing him.
“Well, his precious daughterishere and I’m her bestie, so?” I shrug my shoulders and smile.
“Just get your food and shut the fuck up.”
I smile triumphantly.
Not just because I’ve successfully irritated the hell out of Eddie but because I've made contact with someone back home and things are looking up.
Hunter is coming for me.
Chapter 5
I’ve Got To Take It
MEGAN
The drive to the next city is a blur of anxiety, nausea, and silent prayers. On this leg of the trip, Naomi is sitting up front and I’m sitting next to Naomi’s father in the backseat, my mind racing with plans of escape. After going over my brief conversation with Christian in my head, and understanding that Hunter may have a solid plan to rescue me, it’s pretty clear that Christian was suggesting I should figure out a way to rescue myself.
We finally pull into the parking lot of a dingy motel on the outskirts of the city. The neon sign flickers, casting an eerie glow on the cracked pavement.
"This is our stop for the night," Mr. Fabre announces as if we're on some twisted family road trip.
“I thought you were wealthy,” I say to him, turning my nose up at the dingy location especially because of how unsafe it looks.
“I know you’re used to penthouse living, Miss Taylor, but these accommodations are going to have to do for now.Josephine can tell you, I’m known to love the finer things in life but the first place your fiancé is going to look for you is at the closest Four Seasons Hotel. Eddie, get the girls squared away,” he orders dismissively. “I have some calls to make before I settle in for the night.”
“Yes, boss.”
Eddie's grip on my arm is tight as we shuffle into the motel room. It's small, with two beds and a lingering smell of cigarettes.
“Why don’t you ever manhandle Naomi like this?” I fuss.
