Story: Midnight
She knew exactly how she felt.

‘Janine, are you OK?’
Olivia caught up with her in the locker room and dropped down next to her on the bench.
‘I don’t know what happened,’ she said. Her copper hair had gone frizzy from being stuffed into a woolly hat, and her complexion was still pale.
‘I think you had a panic attack. I understand completely. I went through the same thing not that long ago.’
‘What the hell were you doing, girl?’
They both looked up to see Cutler standing over them, Robert just behind him.
‘Hang on a moment,’ said Olivia.
‘She almost got me killed out there,’ said Robert. ‘If she doesn’t know what she’s doing, she shouldn’t be on the excursions.’ His face was glowing red.
‘Um, you were the one steering us!’ Janine snapped back.
Olivia leaped to her feet. ‘I think we should just take some space. Robert, it was Janine’s first time in a kayak.’
Cutler looked as if he were about to explode. ‘She had her phone out! That was the problem.’
Olivia shot him a warning glance. ‘Janine won’t put anything about the incident on her social media, will you?’ She looked over her shoulder at Janine, who shook her head.
‘Fine,’ he said through gritted teeth. ‘Come on, Rob,let me buy you a drink. I made sure they had some top-shelf whisky on board.’ The two of them stomped away in their heavy boots.
‘What a jerk,’ Olivia said, turning back to Janine.
‘Isn’t that one of your clients?’
Olivia shrugged. ‘I can still say he’s a jerk. You couldn’t help it. It was scary out there.’
‘I don’t want to think about it any more.’ She shivered.
Olivia frowned. ‘Are you OK? We should get you warmed up.’
Liam overheard. ‘We have a sauna just here. Perfect way to destress if you need it.’
Janine shook her head. ‘I think I want to get out of here.’ She turned to Olivia. ‘What are you going to do now?’
‘I’m all yours,’ she said. ‘What about seeing the gallery? I can give you a tour if you did want to film it. I can give you an exclusive I won’t even give that other influencer.’
‘That sounds brill. I did get some good footage out on the kayak, before all the drama. I’m sure I can piece something together about the excursions based on that. I’m not sure I’ll make it out again. Plus, I’m excited to see what you’re a part of on the ship.’
‘And I get to see your work too.’
‘Just don’t judge – I’m still learning. I actually started out in digital marketing so I’m more used to the corporate side of social media. Then when I wanted to travel, it made sense for me to try to start my own thing. Help me pay for some of this.’ She gestured to the ship.
‘That’s so impressive. Do you have a big following?’
Janine shrugged. ‘In my niche, I do OK.’
‘Sounds like false modesty.’
‘When we get back, you can follow me and see for yourself.’
