Story: Midnight Coven
This house was different.
This house felt cold, like a museum.
It reminded him more of the Tower of London than anyone’s family home.
The Tower of London. Jesus. How had that popped into his head?
Remembering the last time he’d been out to that edifice, Nick frowned.
Huh. Maybe that’s why. Maybe some part of Nick had been thinking about that old seer while he chewed over his other problem. That gray-bearded seer had popped into their dimension like it was nothing. He popped in, grabbed his son, Dimitri Yi, and popped back out again.
Obviously, moving between worlds was still possible for that seer, at least.
Obviously, some seers still had that ability.
Nick didn’t know if the old seer had used some kind of tech to accomplish his bleep in and bleep out trick, but he’d managed it either on his own or withsomekind of help. Nick wondered again if it might be possible to find a seer here who could do that for them.
Maybe Mal would know.
Maybe Mal really would know the answer to that.
Or maybe St. Maarten would. But Nick strongly suspected St. Maarten wouldn’t tell him that, even if she knew. She wouldn’t want Nick to take away her prize seers. She wouldn’t want him to take Tai and Malek, especially, but she wouldn’t exactly thank Nick for taking Wynter and Kit out of her employ, either.
That old seer had known Miri and Black.
He seemed to think Miri and Black were still alive.
Nick would need to ask Wynter exactly what the old guy had said. Nick couldn’t remember all of it off the top of his head, but with Wynter’s seer memory, she could repeat it back to him, word for word.
Maybe they could figure out some way to contact him. Maybe that old seer could bring Nick and Wynter and the rest of them back to Nick’s world.
But that was crazy. How the hell could they get a message to some random seer across dimensions?
Unless Wynter really could, somehow.
Wynter had known him intimately, in a way that still made Nick’s teeth grind.
That old seer been that same asshole Wynter was in love with back when she was Dalejem, before she met Nick. The old seer and his wife had both known Dalejem. They’d bothsleptwith Dalejem. They both claimed to love Dalejem. From what that old seer said, both of them seemed to care about Wynter still, or at least have fond memories.
Maybe Wynter could use that.
But even thinking about the possibility made Nick angry.
It made him angry enough that his blood rose.
He felt his fangs start to extend…
Morley cleared his throat.
“You ready?” he asked blandly, lifting one eyebrow.
The old man had reached the top of the stairs.
Nick didn’t meet his gaze.
He just nodded, letting go of the balcony railing to follow him.
