Story: Midnight Coven
Even if Wynter couldn’t, Tai would.
She would pass on the message.
She would also do as she was told and leave.
Still, not getting a response was unnerving.
Hearing only silence in his mind was unnerving as hell.
Not knowingfor surethat either one of them heard and understood the danger they were in made his jaw clench, his fangs extend, enough to make both hurt. It made him aggressive, but that wasn’t the real reaction either. The real reaction was fear.
It scared the shit out of him, truthfully.
Thinking about that, Nick hesitated, then went on.
YOU’D BETTER GET LARA… ST. MAARTEN… ON THIS, TOO, KID.He thought that part reluctantly, but he could feel the truth behind them. He went on more slowly, forming the words cautiously as he thought them.MAYBE SEE IF SHE CAN CHANGE THE OWNERSHIP OF THE HOUSE. AT LEAST IN THE RECORDS. AT LEAST FOR NOW. OR AT LEAST HAVE HER CHANGE WYNTER’S FILE PHOTO. IT’S BETTER IF NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT WYNTER. IF THEY DON’T LOOK INTO WHAT I’M DOING UP HERE. LARA CAN HANDLE THAT. IT’S PRETTY MUCH HER THING…
They were shoving him out the door now.
By the time he thought that last, he was already in the foyer.
For the same reason, Nick blanked his mind.
He only hoped everything he’d thought at the baby seer had gotten through.
He hoped she wouldn’t screw around with getting the message to Wynter.
He hoped one of them could talk to St. Maarten.
More than anything, Nick hoped like hell Tai and Wynter both understood just how bad this could really get.
CHAPTER6
THE REASON WHY
“This is bullshit,”Nick growled. “You get that, right? I was nowhere near the Upper East Side last night. I wasn’t even in the same protected region! It’s two hours in either direction, for fuck’s sake…”
Morley held up a hand.
“Calm down.”
“I won’t calm down! You’re accusing me of fuckingmurderand I want to know why! It’s not even possible! Why didmyname float to the top of this shit pile?”
“There’s no surveillance in your place,” Morley reminded him.
Nick opened his mouth, closed it.
Thinking about the detective’s words, he grimaced.
Of course.
The one thing that would have fucked him in just about every other situation was now the only thing that might have saved him.
He had no definitive proof of where he lived now, or who he lived with.
Definitive, as in surveillance-supported proof of where he’d been sleeping, and what he’d been doing for different hours across last night.
Even if Archangel had something on Wynter’s place, something only Kit could see, Nick couldn’t use it. He’d likely get put away for evensleepingwith Wynter. He hadn’t registered the relationship. He hadn’t asked for any special dispensation.
