Story: Midnight Coven
Morley was driving them around the curve of the main driveway.
They were coming up on a massive, red-painted front door with golden lions on the front.
Unfortunately, Nick recognized that, too.
He saw Jordan’s car parked there and his shoulders relaxed.
Morley must have felt the same.
“Thank Christ he’s here,” the older detective muttered.
“Maybe he’s the one who turned on all the lights,” Nick joked.
“Well, you can hardly blame him for that,” Morley grunted, giving Nick an annoyed look. “You probably scared the shit out of him, Midnight. Freaking him out with your ‘don’t go out there alone’ shit. He’s probably still in his car.”
“He better be,” Nick grunted. “Unless those other jackasses are here.”
Thinking about that, Nick looked around, scowling.
There was another car there. On the other side of the loop. Nick hadn’t noticed it before because it was black and blended almost perfectly with the trees. But it could easily be a police pool car. It had that kind of generic “car” look that all civilian-style police cruisers wore.
Thinking about that, Nick felt his smile fade.
He really did wish Jordan had waited in his car.
Nick knew he wouldn’t have, though.
With the other car here, he definitely would have gone inside to look for Rob and Rick.
Truthfully, Nick would have felt a lot better if Jordan walked out the front door right then, tapping his wrist and asking them what the hell took them so long.
Nick even would have settled for Rob and Rick.
Morley parked the police cruiser right behind Jordan’s more modern, and significantly more expensive, dark blue with white racing stripes, plasma engine car.
“Let’s hope this shit starts to make sense soon,” Morley muttered, giving Nick another dark look. “Although the three of us should probably be thinking about where to go after this. So we can have arealheart-to-heart.”
Nick didn’t answer.
That was pretty blunt for Morley.
The old man must be more frustrated by their need to censor their conversations than even Nick was.
He knew exactly what Morley meant, though.
They were running out of time.
They needed to find this guy, and soon.
If this house was a dead end, if it didn’t help them track down the vamp behind this, or give them a solid idea on where to look next, they had to change their whole approach to this thing, and fast.
They needed to find him.
They needed to find him before he killed again.
