She squinted to make out who it was.
Kylie.
Anger immediately replaced grief as she reached for the door handle.
She stepped out into the October wind and wrapped her arms around herself from the elements. The overcast sky had opened up and started to sprinkle. As she made a dash to the door, cold drops of rain soaked into her sweater. Why hadn’t she thought to bring a coat this morning?
She didn’t look at the weather forecast anymore.
She could barely remember what day it was.
With anger boiling in her veins, she stomped toward the front door, keeping her eyes on Kylie standing at the window.
She reached for the door handle and turned, but it was locked.
Puzzled she removed the key from her purse and inserted it into the tiny hole.
She turned the knob. Nothing.
She tried again, this time using more force. Again, nothing.
Then it dawned on her. The little witch inside had bolted the door from the inside, leaving her unable to enter.
Her anger hit a new level.
She pounded her fist against the door. Kylie did not move. She stood glaring at her through the door with a smirk on her face.
The blast of sirens had her turning around.
A young police officer got out of the patrol car and hurried up to her. “Ma’am, you’re not supposed to go in without a police escort.”
“What is she doing in my house?” She jerked her thumb at Kylie’s smirking face. “No one is supposed to be here while I’m packing my things.”
The police officer knocked once on the door. Kylie promptly opened it.
“Yes, officer?” She gave him an innocent smile.
“Ma’am. Are you the resident of the house?”
“Yes I am.”
“No, she’s not.” Carolina glared. “The house belongs to my husband..er, my ex-husband.”
The officer glanced between them, then turned his attention on Kylie. “What’s your name, ma’am?” The police officer addressed Kylie.
“Kylie Johnson.” She smiled and held out her hand.
Carolina’s stomach dropped when she spotted the large diamond ring and matching wedding band on the twenty-year-old’s bony hand.
“He married you?” The words rushed out of Carolina’s mouth before she could stop them.
Kylie smirked.“This morning. After your divorce was final. We went to the courthouse.” She placed her hands on her growing baby bump. “Of course, we will have a large wedding ceremony once the baby is here and I can fit into my dream dress.”
Carolina felt the nausea march up the back of her throat. White spots danced in front of her eyes.
“Ma’am. Are you okay?” The officer, seeing her face, touched her arm gently.
“Where is Chris?” Carolina asked softly.
