Story: Grumpy Boss of the Year
She lists off a number of islands, and I look at her admirably.
“What? I studied geography.” She grins. “And I don’t think we’re on any of those islands.”
“So, I’m going to let you in on a little secret.”
“Okay, and that is?”
“The island has no name yet.”
“What?” She wrinkles her nose. “What do you mean?”
“I mean it hasn’t been named as yet,” I say as we head over to the Jeep. I grab her suitcase and put it in the back and then put my bag beside hers before walking over and opening the passenger door. She gets in, and then I close the door and round the front of the vehicle to get before I pull out the keys and start the ignition.
“How did you have keys to this car already?”
“Because it’s my car. I shipped it over here a couple of months ago.”
“You shipped a car here a couple of months ago?” She looks at me in surprise.
I watch as she looks out the window and takes in the environment.
“Are we, like, in the country somewhere? I’m just saying, there aren’t any other cars or buildings or anything.”
“There are a couple of buildings,” I say. “There aren’t many people that live here. It’s a very low population.”
“Oh, and you just decided to come here?” She looks at me in surprise. “Wait, are you thinking about buying this place orsomething? Do you want to have a really exclusive resort? Is that why we’re here?”
“Yes and no,” I say as I pull off and make a left. “Look at that.” I point to the turquoise blue water to the right of us. We can see the white sand and the tall, healthy palm trees, their fronds blowing in the wind.
“I can’t believe that is the beach, right there. I don’t remember the last time I’ve been to the beach.”
“You want to go now?”
“Don’t we have to be somewhere?” she asks me in surprise.
“No.” I continue driving for a couple of minutes and then make a right down a dirt road that I already knew existed. I pull to the side, and she stares at me.
“Wait. What’s going on? Is this a public beach?”
“Kind of,” I say as I stop the car and jump out. “Come on.”
“But…”
“But what?”
“I’m in a dress and shoes and…”
“Take your shoes off. We’ll walk in the sand. Trust me; it’s soft and silky.”
“Okay.”
She takes her shoes off, and we walk hand-in-hand to the water. There are two palm trees just standing there at the water’s edge.
She looks over at me. “It’s really beautiful here. So picturesque.”
“You think so?”
“I do, and the water’s so blue. It looks so inviting.”
“What? I studied geography.” She grins. “And I don’t think we’re on any of those islands.”
