“Sure looks that way, doesn’t it?”
“When is Amanda getting into town?” I lean against the stall door.
“Sometime tonight.”
He smells nice, like he’s wearing woodsy cologne.
“Are you nervous?”
“You want the truth?” He licks his lips, and I can’t ignore the way the motion catches my attention. His lips are full and soft-looking. My heart pounds to think that he might be kissing me with those lips sometime soon, which is crazy. This is Langston, the pain in my rear and biggest rival.
I nod, taking my gaze up to his baby blue eyes. Langston has always been the best looking of all the Keith boys. He’s got those broad shoulders and a perfectly trimmed beard. Sometimes it’s just a light covering of scruff, which is also flattering on him.
“The truth is, I’m terrified of seeing her again.”
I’m not sure how I feel about that. It shouldn’t matter, but part of me is worried he still has it bad for her. And I don’t like it one bit. “Why are you terrified?” I don’t really want to know the answer, but my mouth betrays me and the words spill out anyway.
“I don’t know what she’s going to say.”
“Are you worried she’s going to want to get back together with you?” I can’t help but ask it because that’s really my main concern, which is stupid. Langston and I aren’t really anything more than friends, and barely at that.
I was just thinking about how kissable his lips might be, but that’s beside the point.
“I don’t know what I feel. I just know that my heart pounds thinking about what she’s going to say.” His mouth is turned downward.
“So your heart is pounding like she’s a special someone, or it’s pounding because you’re anxious?” Do I really want to know the answer?
“I’m anxious. It feels like she has something she’s going to hold over my head, and I don’t know what it is.” His eyebrows knit together.
He’s upset about this. And there’s this twinge inside my heart I don’t usually have for him. I feel bad for him. For whatever reason, I don’t want to see Langston worked up about her. “I’m sorry,” I whisper. “I have no idea what this must be like for you.”
He shrugs. “I’ll find out soon enough what the truth is.”
“I thought you were convinced she was a gold digger.”
“I’m not ruling that out, but I can’t help this nagging feeling that something else is going on. Something bigger.”
I scrunch my brow. “What gives you that idea?”
“It’s subtle. Nothing she says. It’s just the tone of her voice or something. I can’t put my finger on it.”
“Did she call you?”
“Yeah. Just briefly to make arrangements of where she’d stay and for how long.”
“What’s the plan then?”
“She’s going to meet us at my parents’ home and will be staying with them for a week.”
“So long?”
“Yeah. She wouldn’t say why though.”
I reach out and put a hand on his arm. “I hope everything goes well for you tonight.”
He lets out a sigh. “Me too.”
“Do you want me to be there?”
