Story: Covert (Eagle Tactical 4)
Maybe it was the hormones and the fact that I was pregnant, but I couldn’t seem to get enough of Jaxson. My fingernails grazed over his back and down to his bottom, pulling him tighter, claiming him for me.
His pace quickened, sensing my urgency and need.
Everything inside of me ached.
My heated core trembled and throbbed as he filled me, fueled me, and satisfied me.
Toes curled. I clung to him with eyes closed as fireworks danced over my vision. Gasping for breath, panting hard, I held him tight as he came undone with me.
He was quick to roll off and pulled me against him. “I don’t want to squish you or hurt the baby.”
“You won’t,” I said with a soft laugh. “Our little pumpkin is well protected.” I gently patted the slight bulge of my stomach.
Curled against Jaxson, my fingers danced in his hair, my eyes never leaving his. “Your sister, Skylar, wants to throw me a baby shower. Well, us.”
“No.”
“Come on. She’s trying to make amends,” I said.
His eyes twitched. “What she did, it’s unforgivable.”
He was one stubborn man. I’d give him that. “Yes, but she’s trying to do better. She’s your sister. Didn’t you forgive Jayden?” I asked.
“That’s different.”
Jaxson had offered Jayden a spot with the Eagle Tactical team. I’d been surprised that he’d invited him to join them and even more shocked to learn that Jayden had accepted the offer.
“How?” I asked.
“I expected Jayden to betray me.”
I sat up slightly in bed. My fingers paused in his hair. “You are so full of shit.” I grabbed the pillow and smacked him playfully with it.
“You did not just hit me with a pillow.”
“Oh, I did,” I countered. “And you can’t hit your pregnant wi—girlfriend back.”
Jaxson grabbed me by the hips and tucked me under him, straddling me. His hands tickled my hips. “That’s not what you were going to say.”
I kept my mouth shut. My eyes were wide, and I was trying desperately not to laugh too loud and wake Izzie next door.
“You don’t know what I was going to say,” I countered.
Jaxson’s hands stalled on my hips. “Is that so? It sounded quite a bit like you were about to refer to yourself as my pregnant wife.”
His gaze bore into mine.
Shit.
He went there.
He said what I was desperately trying not to say and that had slipped out inadvertently. It just felt natural, far more familiar, and better than when I’d been married the first time around.
I had sworn I’d never remarry. And I’d meant it until I met Jaxson.
We were having a pumpkin together.
I could still hear Jaxson’s voice in my head. The first words he’d said when I’d referred to the baby as pumpkin. You’ve got to be kidding me!He’d come to understand it was a coping mechanism and a way to discuss the baby without me fretting that I’d jinx it.
