Story: Covert (Eagle Tactical 4)
What if I was headed in the wrong direction?
The world around me spun as I ran. The trees swayed, and I gripped the rough bark of one, holding myself up.
Gasping for breath, I couldn’t afford to slow down.
In the distance, tires crunched on gravel.
I couldn’t ascertain whether the vehicle headed toward Sergio’s house or away from it. I didn’t think I’d gotten turned around, but the forest seemed to extend onward forever.
Who would be coming to visit Sergio in the middle of the night?
No one.
And while I wanted to believe it was Jaxson, he probably had no idea where I was or how to find me.
Had Jayden even intended on securing my freedom, or only Hazel’s? I knew there was bad blood between the two brothers, but I didn’t know how bad it went.
A shotgun fired from behind, and I threw myself on the forest floor.
I hadn’t heard footsteps. He’d been quiet. Unless he’d driven close by and aimed through the window of the vehicle?
I ran farther from the road, through the forest, until I ran straight into a metal fence that towered above me.
I was trapped.
