He jerked his chin inside. That couldn’t be good. And when I found Kate waiting just outside the locker room, I knew something was very wrong.
Rhett came to a stop and crossed his arms over his chest. The man only had two emotions: grumpy and angry, and right now he was definitely angry.
“Hey Kate, didn’t know you made the trip.”
She gave me a tight smile. “I just got into town. I had work in Tampa.”
But now the weekend had started so she flew out to join Isaac here in Chicago before the All-Star Break. “What’s wrong?” I couldn’t think of a single reason Kate would need me.
“There’s no easy way to say this, when you pull your phone out of your locker you’re going to find it full of messages from your security team.”
My stomach hit the floor. Now I knew why Rhett was angry. “Is she okay?”
“Annalise is unharmed. Jeri is with her.”
Jeri was Annalise’s best friend, but before she even knew Annalise, she was Kate’s college roommate. They went way back. “I’m gonna need you to talk faster, Doc. You’re freaking me out.”Annalise is unharmed.Which didn’t mean she wasn’t hurt.
Another tight smile. “Owen overstepped.”
“He fucking lost his shit,” Rhett growled. “He shook her.”
“What the hell?” I yelled so loud it echoed all the way down the hallway. “Where is she?” How fast could I change? Hell, I’d fly in my dirty uniform. Fuck it.
Kate put up her hands. Oh hell, she wasn’t about to tell me they weren’t letting me leave. I’d sneak out of the fucking hotel. I didn’t care.
But instead she answered my questions. “She’s back at Rhett’s. Jeri is spending the night with her. She’s rattled, Seth. Owen threatened her multiple times before he grabbed her. Even after her security detail subdued him, he kept saying things.”
“He better be behind bars.” It was the only way to keep me from killing him the next time I saw him.
“He is. And he’s not getting out. Not yet.”
Fucking hell. “Am I allowed to leave?”
Kate glanced at Rhett. “Here’s the deal. One of you can leave. We can’t afford to lose you both. We have a plane waiting.”
“It’s me. I’m going.” There was no question. Rhett might be her blood relative but Annalise wasmine.
“Thought you might say that,” Rhett grumbled.
“If I have to knock you out, I will.”
He rocked back on his heels, chin raised. “I’d love to see you try, but I happen to think you’d be more comforting than I will be. Go.”
I ran into the locker room. The guys stared as I shoved my shit into my bag, yanked my cleats off and jammed my feet into sneakers.
“I’ll take care of your stuff,” Rhett said, one hand on my shoulder. Our gazes collided. Rhett didn’t need words to tell me what he was thinking.Take care of her or I’ll kill you.He really liked to drive home the murder option.
Not that I blamed him. I had murder on my mind too.
I almost collided with Kate kissing Isaac as I ran out of the locker room.
Isaac cocked an eyebrow. “Not going to change?”
I had clean clothes in my bag. “They have bathrooms on the plane, don’t they?”
Kate’s grin widened. “Let’s get you to the airport.”
