It must have shown on my face because he hung his head and sighed. “I know it’s suffocating. I know it’s over the top. But babe, no one has seen or heard from the fucker and then he shows up at your game? You can’t tell me that’s not a threat.”
And that had scared him into overprotective boyfriend mode. So I kissed the underside of his jaw, breathing in his cologne. “I don’t blame you. The last time I saw him he wasn’t in his right mind.”
“He hurt you, Annalise.”
“I remember.” The bruises faded but the memories hadn’t. Not yet.
Seth pulled me against him, wrapping his strong arms around me. “I just need to know you’re safe.”
“I’m not complaining.”
“But you want to. I can see it. You’re stifled. The exact opposite of how you felt four days ago. I want that for you, Annalise. I want you to feel that good, that free, all the time. Forever.”
Damn he was sweet. “I don’t think it’s possible to be that happy all the time.”
“Doesn’t stop me from wanting it.” He kissed me. “Janet and Rowdy think Montgomery showing himself is a good sign. The more he sticks his head out of whatever shit hole he’s hiding in, the more likely they are to find him.”
All of our security team was working harder than ever after they missed Owen at my game. I was pretty sure if they didn’t find him in the next few days, they were going to fire themselves in shame.
It didn’t help that Seth had lost his shit. I had never seen him so upset. I knew it came from fear for my safety, but I was genuinely worried about his health. We needed to find Owen before Seth had a rage induced heart attack.
“You lovebirds are so darn cute!” Chris and his wife Olivia joined us. Olivia, I learned, lived near Everett on Calusa Key, and had known the Anson brothers all their lives. She was also an incredible photographer who frequently took stunning photos at the games.
“You two are pretty cute too.” They really were. Chris had that rugged charm all the most confident pitchers seemed to have, and Olivia was simply stunning. She looked like she belonged on a beach.
Chris beamed. “Marriage is something I highly recommend. When you two are ready, of course.”
“We’ll get there.” Seth grinned. “But first we’re buying Mayfield’s house.”
Olivia rolled her eyes. “Love is all that matters. Buy a house, get married, have kids, do whatever makes you happy.”
I wasn’t ready for kids. I wasn’t sure I ever would be. It simply wasn’t something that was a high priority for me. And Seth had never mentioned kids…
I shot him a look.
He winked. “I was thinking Roscoe could use a sibling.”
“Another dog?” Now that I could get on board with. “We might need to start looking for a dog sitter.”
“We’re on the same page, babe.” Then his lips brushed my ear as he whispered, “I want you all to myself.”
I melted against him. “The feeling is very mutual.” But the sweet feeling didn’t last long.
“Hey, what’s happening?” someone shouted from the windows where a crowd quickly gathered around him.
“Fuck,” Seth swore as he pulled out his phone.
“There have to be a dozen police cars out there!” Someone else exclaimed.
My heart started hammering in my chest. “Seth?”
“It’s Montgomery,” he confirmed. “He’s here and we need to go.” He jerked his chin towards the doors.
“Seth?” Chris’s voice was low.
“Everyone. Out.”
He didn’t make an announcement. Just swept me out the door and down the hallway to the elevators. The moment they opened Mercedes nodded for us to get in while Rowdy ran down the hallway to the banquet room.
