My heart squeezed. “You didn’t give up on me. You wanted to save me.”
“If only I did it a day earlier…”
I moaned a sigh that felt like a blunt blade in my chest. “I’m so sorry, baby.”
“Carter?”
“Outside with Owl.”
“Anyone else?”
Skid and Big Gun’s faces as they sacrificed their lives for us would forever haunt me. I shook my head, wishing I’d been dead instead of them.
Dusty’s eyes squeezed shut. His breath labored as he inhaled.
“Please forgive me, Dusty. I know I don’t deserve it, just like the brothers I killed didn’t deserve to die either. They gave their lives to protect us, without knowing I was the reason they were dead. Carter trusted me, not knowing he lost his father and uncle because of me.”
His eyes reddened with tears. “The first time you call them brothers…”
“I can say I’m sorry for the rest of my life, but it’d never be enough. I’m ready for whatever punishment you see fit. Anything you’d do to me would be mercy compared to living with what I’d done. I just need you to know I never meant to hurt you. You’re all that matters to me in this world.”
Weakly, he lifted my hand to his mouth and kissed my fingertips. “It was inevitable. We all make mistakes, Cammie, and you were hurting. I love you, and I forgive you. But I need to know if you feel the same way about me.”
I went closer and brushed his hair off his forehead. Then I kissed him as softly as I could. “I do.”
“Love me?” he asked.
I smiled through the tears. “Forever.”
