Story: Cameron
“Normal? Don’t fucking tell me this shit. You’re a fucking doctor. Wake her up!”
He got a pin from his pocket. “Did she speak?”
I paced the room like a caged animal. “Yes.”
“Good.” Owl poked her on several places and used that pin on her feet and hands. Then he checked her with the fucking flashlight thing.
My hands clasped behind my head as he came to me. “Her vitals are great. Her nerves are fine. It’s a good sign that she spoke. It means there’s no brain damage. You just have to—”
“Fucking wait. Yeah, I got it!” I kicked something else and heard something smash, too enraged to notice what it was. “But I’m tired of waiting. I mean she was up, man, looking at me, speaking to me. What the fuck just happened?”
“You look like you’re about to get an aneurism. That won’t help when she’s actually up. She needs you, Dusty…in your right fucking mind.”
“Prez.” Ginger came up to my door.
“What?” I asked, my eyes on Cammie.
“Skid and Big Gun are back with the drivers.”
Their timing couldn’t be better. I hoped those fucking drivers didn’t want to talk. I looked at Owl. “Stay here. Don’t let her out of your sight till I get back.”
CHAPTER 20
Dusty
We were four people in the Boiler. Two had no choice but to be here. Jared, the driver who took Beth to Detroit, was pissing himself in a corner. Shane something, the other driver who wouldn’t tell me yet where he’d taken her after she left Wrench’s place, was shaking in fear in another corner.
“Please stop.” The begging was followed by another scream and plea for mercy as Big Gun cut into that Jared fuck.
Now it was my turn to get Shane to speak and blow out some steam in the process. I hit his head with pry bars, knocking him to the ground in no time. “I won’t ask you again.” I threw the tool and grabbed my knife from my boot. “Where the fuck did you drop her?”
“In the middle of nowhere,” he sniffled. “I already told you. I swear.”
I dragged my knife down the man’s arm. Fresh blood bloomed on his flesh under the blade before spilling down. “And where exactly is that middle of nowhere?”
“Kentucky,” he groaned. “I dropped her on the road. There were no other cars. No people. Nothing. I drove away for half a mile, and she was still standing there.”
We didn’t have chapters in Kentucky. She knew leaving her there would be a dead end for me to follow. Fuck.
I punched the guy until I smashed his face and his blood smeared mine. Even if I killed him, my rage wouldn’t go away.
“Prez…” Big Gun stopped my fist in midair, the piece of shit under me choking on his breath.
I straightened and nodded at my Enforcer.
Big Gun sliced his knife across the throat of the driver, silencing him forever.
CHAPTER 21
Cameron
I opened my eyes to a light spilling through a corner in the room, my vision blurry. It took a few minutes for the place to come into focus. I was cold, my head hazy, my arm in a cast, the other hooked up to an IV and the machine that kept beeping in my head. A huge, black t-shirt covered me mid thighs, its smell familiar. I gave myself a moment to get my bearings then sat up.
Shit. Pain radiated so hard through my broken body I cried. Why did I hurt all over like I’d been hit by a fucking truck?
I pushed myself upright and breathed deeply to fight back the waves of nausea rolling over me. “Fuck.” My breaths caught for a few seconds. Gritting my teeth, I swung my legs to dangle over the side of the bed, reaching out to the IV pole beside my bed.
Sounds of running water came from the lit corner in the room. I assumed it was a bathroom, and someone was taking a shower. I tried to recall the previous day’s events, but my memory was foggy as hell. Where was I? What was I doing here? My pulse raced as images of broken glass and blood flashed in my head. The last thing I remembered clearly was a sound of a gunshot.
He got a pin from his pocket. “Did she speak?”
