She frowned. “I know it’s last minute, but Hollywood waits for no one. That’s the day they want you there. We’re already behind schedule because of the casting problems.”
He stood and dragged a hand through his hair. “I have a big show here Saturday night. I can’t miss it.”
Kenzie pursed her lips. “Jas, I’m sure they could do without you at the bar for one show.”
“No.” He shook his head. “You don’t understand. That’s the show we’re rehearsing for. I have investors coming to see the show.”
She tilted her head. “Investors?”
“I’m trying to buy a theater here. Move the show to my own place. I need to be there on Saturday.”
She gave him a patient look. “Come on, Jas. I mean, that sounds like a fun project and all. But local theater? That’s your endgame?”
“Kenzie.”
“This is a chance to be on a television show that will be worldwide. This is it, the big break. Netflix. Starring role credit. Fame. Money. All that stuff we’ve both spent our whole lives working toward.” She gave him an exasperated look. “Get your head together, Jas. Local theater is where actors who can’t make it go to fade into obscurity. No one would walk away from this.”
He had sworn to his group that he wouldn’t bail on them again. He’d promised Hollyn he’d be beside her onstage. But…Kenzie was right. How the hell could he walk away from this chance? If any one of his group got this opportunity, he’d never hold it against them. This was the dream. “I have to be back by Saturday night. I need to be here for the show.”
Kenzie rolled her eyes. “Then be back by Saturday night. Audition is Friday. Get an early flight out on Saturday morning.”
He let out a breath and squeezed the back of his neck. That could work. He could do both. “All right. I can do that.”
Kenzie rushed to him and gave him another hug. “Awesome. What’s your new phone number?”
He rattled off the digits, his mind numb.
“I’ll look up some flights and text you later. I can’t wait for them to see you, Jas. This is going to be great.” Kenzie kissed him on the cheek and then stepped back and wiggled her fingers at him in a little wave. “Later, loser.”
It was a little joke they used to say when they left each other. He didn’t like the way it made him feel, though. He was down for the audition. He was not down with starting anything back up with Kenzie.
The audition.
Fuck. How the hell was he going to tell the group?
More than that, how was he going to tell Hollyn?
