* Two Years Later *

I laugh at the oven mitts covered in a variety of ducks as I pull them off. They were a house “re-warming” gift from Mom when Zoe first moved in.

As the finished lasagna cools on top of the stove, I add a faint final dusting of Parmesan and oregano. My darling wife has been very busy this week, and she taught me how to make this, so I need her to be impressed.

To be fair, I think I’ve been impressing her a lot lately.

She was so inspired by the way we updated the school in Old Hemlock Valley that Zoe began looking around at other towns on the mountain.

When she heard about the sorry state of the elementary school in Pinesley, she asked if we could help there, too.

Like I would ever say no to my gorgeous girl.

The second I hear her Jeep pull up, I race out to gather her into my arms. “Where were you, baby? More crafting supplies?”

Zoe laughs. “When my craft area isn’t even finished yet?”

I pout. “I’m sorry. I’ll call someone tomorrow, I swear.”

She shakes her head in an attempt to look stern and completely fails. “I really am going to need that done for next week. Because after that, there’s another project we’re going to be working on together that will take up quite a bit of our focus.”

I grin, running my hands around her waist, and her lush, sexy hips. “Another school upgrade? Or some more ideas for the video updates for Wolfe Security that you so kindly have started doing?”

Zoe takes hold of my hands, resting them on her belly as she stares deeply into my eyes. “We’re going to have to turn a spare bedroom into a nursery. What do you think about light green? I was thinking if?—”

I’m already kissing her as my eyes widen, holding her precious body against mine, snuggling my perfect gorgeous wife with my right hand still splayed across her stomach. “A baby? My sweet baby is going to have our baby? Really ?!”

Zoe looks up at me, blinking back tears. “Really. I’m…kind of freaking out.”

“No need to freak, gorgeous. We have everything we could possibly need. My mom is incredible with babies – she’s the go-to babysitter for all the neighbors and cousins.

She’ll help us out there. My brothers will help with building anything for the nursery.

Plus I can hire Clark to build playground out back. And?—”

“Easy there, big guy,” she says, trailing her palm down the center of my chest. “I know your heart is in the right place, but we have months to get ready. This week, my only plan is for a little rest, vitamins, and ginger tea.”

“And lasagna? Dinner is ready.”

“See?” Zoe’s palm strokes my cheek. “You always know exactly what I need.”

Wrapping her in my arms again, I revel in the feel of our hearts beating together as I look out at the lush forest around us. Generations of Wolfes have been born here – and now my very own pack is beginning, thanks to my wonderful Zoe.
