Epilogue
Paul
I watch the scene in front of me unfold, my impatience growing with every word.
They lost the last mythical shifter we had in custody.
They fucking lost her.
If she gets to the peryton, or heaven help us, her fucking mates, this whole war is headed to the shitter.
You would think a war between god-like beings would be more organized than this, but humans seem to have a fucking awful grasp on actually getting things done efficiently.
“This is UN-FUCKING-ACCEPTABLE!” Arthur throws the book he was holding across the room, the spine slapping against the wall.
The sound echoes through the room, scaring the guard who came in to report the failure.
I cross my arms against the wall, watching it all play out.
The incompetent little fuck by the door cowers at Arthur’s anger and that seems to piss him off even more.
“There was a breach on another one of the labs and another mythical shifter has since gone missing,” he seethes, every word dripping in venom.
“And the only fucking explanation you have is that no one saw anything?!”
“Y-y-yes,” the guard stammers out as he pisses his pants like a goddamn child.
“There was no breach that we could find. She was there and then she was gone and the other guards were knocked out around where she should have b—“
A shot rings out, the gun in my hand smoking with gunpowder as the guards brains splatter against my door.
“You didn’t want to hear him out?” Lincoln murmurs from a chair in front of the desk, his face as stoic and bored as it always is.
Not much phases him, which is why Arthur hired him in the first place.
“I don’t need the details of incompetence from a man that can’t even hold his goddamn bladder. All that matters is that she’s fucking gone and they failed.” I shrug, smirking at the look on Arthur’s face.
“They failed God, and He will smite all of us if it happens again,” Arthur says, shaking his head, a trickle of fear in his voice.
Good.
He should be scared.
Lincoln laughs and I damn near put a bullet in him as well until I realize he’s laughing at Arthur, not me.
“Three failures in a few months is definitely going to piss Him off, Mr. Messiah. Maybe He picked the wrong messiah.”
“Shut your fucking mouth,” Arthur says between clenched teeth.
“I was chosen by God to eradicate these abominations. I was chosen to lead us to greatness and that is exactly what I intend to do. This will be fixed and He will bless me and those close to me.”
Arthur gives Lincoln and me a pointed look and it takes everything I have not to laugh in their faces.
It’s hard to remember they think I’m human like they are sometimes, but it’s necessary.
They’re clearly incapable of doing this on their own.
Humans are as flawed as the day I made them.
“Do you understand that this needs to be fixed? Now?” Arthur looks between the two of us.
“Lincoln?” He nods his understanding.
“Paul?”
“Understood,” I answer him in an annoyed tone.
I walk out of the room without another word, my annoyance making it hard to keep up appearances.
I fucking hate being here, but you know what I hate more?
Not just taking control in the first place.
I never should have left it in the hands of my stupid ass creations.
They were made to obey, that’s it.
I thought it was easier to pick one of them, but why did I pick the fucking Beaumonts to lead the charge?
His great-grandfather was fairly competent, I guess.
But every generation just keeps getting fucking worse.
Hence, why I’m out of my golden throne and in a mortal shell.
Ugh.
I’m now Paul for the foreseeable future.
I laugh, rolling my eyes at the stupid name.
Pollaris, the God of Mankind reduced to fucking Paul just to keep these fuckers from handing the victory of this war over to Adessa.
“It seems I really must do everything myself,” I growl, shedding my mortal shell and stretching my wings.
“Watch out, little unicorn. You slipped your hold and now I’m coming for you, myself.”
