TWENTY-NINE
Emma watched from a few feet back from the ship’s bulkhead, her hazel eyes fixed on the horizon as the lush greenery of the tropical paradise emerged from the shimmering sea. The excited electricity in the air among everyone on the ship was a stark contrast to the tumultuous journey they had endured. A mix of relief and anticipation filled the salty air.
Liam approached, his muscular frame moving with familiar grace, and his arm almost totally healed with no sign of the bandage. He wrapped an arm around Emma’s waist and pulled her close. “Almost there, love. Our sanctuary awaits.”
Emma leaned into his touch, savoring the warmth and security he provided. “I can hardly believe it. After everything we’ve been through...”
“We made it because of you,” Liam murmured, his lips brushing her temple. “Your strength, your love—it’s what kept us going.”
“Did you ever think we’d get this far?” Alex gave her a lopsided grin. “I mean, after we had to run to other times.”
“It feels like a lifetime ago,” Emma sighed, knowing it was barely eight months since the journey had started.
And no pregnancy to speak of.
She pushed the thought back, focusing her attention on that fact that she was no longer forced to have a family, but that she wanted one. On the island, with the threat of being useless or sold for pleasure gone, she could find herself pregnant in no time.
“While I never worried you would get any of us killed, it does feel impossible that after everything we made it.”
“Mercenaries, rogue military, running from the real military, smugglers, and the most dangerous attack I’ve ever been part of,” William switched places with Liam, pulling her close against him for a moment. “I’m certain this won’t be all sunshine and roses, but it’ll be a fresh start.”
She wished Chris and Bash were here to see the ship pull in, but they were in training for how to help people disembark from the ship. Too many guards had been lost in the attack a few weeks ago and she almost worried they would have taken on permanent positions here. Not that she wouldn’t have been proud to see them helping others, but she didn’t want them gone for so long of their lives.
As the ship glided into the makeshift harbor, Emma allowed herself a small smile. They had sacrificed so much to reach this point, but their unwavering devotion to each other had seen them through the darkest of times.
The vessel shuddered as it docked, and Emma took a steadying breath, feeling the gentle sway of the ship beneath her feet as she prepared to step onto solid ground in just a bit. A new beginning awaited them on this island refuge, a chance to rebuild their lives and their love.
“Alright, we should have grabbed our bags before this, William, you go meet Bash and Chris to help with security, the rest of us will get all the stuff and wait in the room.”
William locked his gaze on hers. “Don’t let them make you carry too many bags.”
Grinning, she watched as William disappeared back toward the bridge. He’d changed so much since helping Captain Novak, that she wouldn’t be surprised if asked for a leadership role once they settled in on the island.
Liam’s hand on her shoulder drew Emma from her thoughts. “We have to wait a bit longer,” he said, his tone apologetic. “Chris, Bash, and William are handling security, making sure it’s safe. While I’d love to let you stand here and look at the scenery, I can’t take all the bags and I refuse to let Alex come with me if you stay here.”
Emma nodded, unsurprised by the precaution. Even in this supposed haven, they could not let their guard down completely. The world had taught them that lesson the hard way.
As they made their way below deck, Liam instinctively took the lead, his broad shoulders and confident stride a reassuring presence. Emma followed close behind, her heart fluttering with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Alex brought up the rear, his hazel eyes alert and scanning their surroundings for any potential threats.
The narrow corridors of the ship seemed to stretch on endlessly, the metal walls humming with the steady throb of the engines. Liam navigated the maze-like passageways with ease, his steps sure and purposeful. Emma’s gaze lingered on the strong lines of his back, the way his muscles rippled beneath his worn shirt with each movement.
At last, they reached the barren room they had called home for the past weeks. Emma’s eyes swept over the small space, taking in the rumpled bedding and scattered belongings. A pang of bittersweet nostalgia washed over her as she realized this would be the last time she’d see this room.
“Here we go, let’s grab our gear and get back topside,” Liam instructed, his voice low and authoritative. “Emma, you take your bag and mine. Alex, you handle the rest.”
Emma nodded, reaching for their well-worn packs. As she shouldered the heavy bags, her gaze drifted to the small porthole, where the lush green of the island beckoned. She couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness at the thought of leaving behind the friends she had made on this journey. The bonds forged through shared hardships and triumphs were not easily broken. They would be on the island, but she wasn’t certain how big the community was, or would grow to be.
When Liam’s hand brushed against hers, a gentle reminder of his unwavering support, Emma knew that her true family was right here beside her. Together, they would face whatever challenges this new sanctuary might bring.
Alex hefted the remaining bags with ease, his cocky grin firmly in place. “Ready when you are, fearless backup leader,” he quipped, his tone light despite the underlying tension.
Liam rolled his eyes good-naturedly before leading them back through the winding corridors. Emma’s heart raced as they neared the upper deck, the salty sea air growing stronger with each step. The promise of a new beginning, of a life free from the constant threat of danger and uncertainty, beckoned like a siren’s call.
As they emerged into the bright sunlight, Emma squinted against the glare, her eyes adjusting to the vibrant colors of the island paradise before them. The soft sway of palm trees, the distant crash of waves against pristine beaches, and the excited chatter of their fellow survivors created a symphony of hope and possibility.
Emma’s gaze sought out the familiar faces of Chris, William, and Bash, who stood tall and proud among the security detail. Their eyes met, and a silent understanding passed between them —a promise that no matter where their duties might take them on this island, their bond would remain unbreakable.
She turned to face Liam and Alex, her heart swelling with affection as she met their gazes one by one. In their eyes, she saw the same mix of emotions that swirled within her own heart. The same hope, fear, determination, and determined spirit.
“We’ve come so far,” Emma said, her voice steady despite the lump in her throat. “Whatever happens next, we face it together.”
Liam, ever the pillar of strength, pulled her into a fierce embrace. “Always, Em. Always.”
As they held each other, the gentle breeze carrying the promise of a brighter future, Emma knew that their journey was far from over. But with her men by her side, she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. On this island paradise, they would build a new life, one filled with the love and sacrifice that had brought them this far.
After what felt like an eternity, the sound of footsteps walked toward where they stood instead of away and off the ship. Emma’s heart raced as she turned, her eyes widening at the sight of Chris’s broad frame almost blocking out the sun. A rare smile graced his usually stoic features, the corners of his eyes crinkling with genuine warmth.
“It’s time,” he said, his deep voice resonating through Emma. “Time to go home for the first time.”
Emma’s breath caught in her throat, the weight of his words settling over her like a comforting blanket. Home. A concept that had seemed so distant, so unattainable, amidst the chaos of their broken world. Yet here they stood, on the edge of a new beginning.
She reached for Ranger’s leash, the familiar texture grounding her as she rose to her feet. He stood with her, heeling by her side with his tail wagging with an enthusiasm that mirrored the flutter in her own heart.
“Let’s do this,” Emma said, her voice steady despite the emotions swirling within her.
With Ranger leading the way, Emma stepped into the corridor, her men falling into step beside her. Their presence was a comforting reminder of the bond they shared, the love that had sustained them through the darkest of times.
As she made her way down the gangplank with them at her back, the salty sea breeze whipped through Emma’s curls, carrying with it the scent of promise and new beginnings. Each step brought them closer to the island, to the sanctuary they had risked everything to reach.
Emma’s heart pounded in her chest, a mix of excitement and apprehension coursing through her. She glanced behind her at her men, drawing strength from their unwavering support. Chris, his eyes sharp and vigilant, scanned their surroundings with the precision of a soldier. Liam, his hand resting on the small of her back, offered a reassuring smile. Alex, his gaze locked on the island ahead, radiated a quiet determination. William and Bash, their shoulders brushing against hers, stood ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
Together, they had weathered storms that would have broken lesser souls. They had loved fiercely, sacrificed greatly, and emerged stronger for it. And now, as they stepped onto the sandy shores of their new home, Emma knew that their journey was far from over. It was just beginning in a whole new world that didn’t suffer the way the one they left behind did.
As Emma’s feet sank into the soft sand, a group of residents approached, their smiles warm and welcoming. A woman with sun-kissed skin and eyes that sparkled with genuine kindness stepped forward, her arms laden with a woven basket filled with ripe, colorful fruit.
“Welcome to the island, your new home,” she said, her voice melodic and soothing. “We’ve been eagerly awaiting your ship’s arrival. Please, accept this as a token of welcome where fresh fruit is in great supply.”
Emma’s heart swelled with excitement as she accepted the basket, the sweet aroma of mangoes and papayas filling her senses. “Thank you,” she replied, her voice thick with emotion. “Your kindness means more than you can imagine.”
“Miss,” a little girl in a swimsuit tugged on Emma’s hand. “We’re excited to see more mommy’s and daddy’s here. I was born over there, but it’s much nicer here.” She held out a drink, the glass covered with condensation was a welcome respite from the tropical heat. Emma savored the refreshing taste of coconut water, the liquid soothing her parched throat.
As she exchanged pleasantries with the people who would be her new community, she found Delany gave her a small wave. All around were people she’d spent the last forty-something days with, all ready to start new.
Emma couldn’t help but marvel at the vibrant colors that surrounded them. The lush green foliage, the brilliant hues of the flowers that dotted the landscape, and the crystal-clear turquoise waters that lapped at the shore created a breathtaking tapestry of life.
The air was heavy with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, a heady perfume that filled her lungs with each breath. It was a stark contrast to the acrid smoke and desolation they had left behind, a reminder of the beauty that still existed in the world.
Emma’s men stood close, their presence a comforting anchor amidst the overwhelming sensations. She caught Bash’s eye, and he reached for her hand, intertwining their fingers in a silent gesture of support. Alex and William flanked her, their gazes sweeping the area, ever vigilant even in this moment of peace.
Chris wasted no time moving off to have a conversion with another man, their easy smiles and genuine interest bridging the gap between strangers and newfound friends. Emma watched him with pride, knowing that he was going to be an amazing person for people here. His experience with the military set him apart and made him as valuable here as he was too Emma. And she loved that for him.
As the introductions continued, Emma couldn’t shake the feeling that this was more than just a new beginning. It was a chance to heal, to rebuild, and to find the love and family she had always yearned for. With her men by her side, she knew that anything was possible.
The island’s warmth and hospitality wrapped around them like a comforting embrace, a promise of the life they could build together. Emma’s heart soared with hope, knowing that they had finally found a place to call home.
A hush fell over the gathered crowd as a figure emerged from the lush foliage, an air of calm authority emanating from her presence. The ruler of the safe haven, a woman with sun-weathered skin and kind eyes, stepped forward to address the newcomers.
“Welcome, travelers! My name is Maria, elected official of this island that brings together souls from all over the world as openings present themselves.” she began, her voice carrying a melodic lilt that instantly put Emma at ease. “You have journeyed far and faced untold hardships to reach our shores. Here, on this island, we offer you sanctuary, a place to heal and rebuild.”
Emma listened intently, her heart barely beating as she listened to each word. The ruler spoke of community, of the strength found in unity, and the promise of a new beginning. It was everything Emma had dared to hope for during their perilous journey.
“In this haven, we are all equal,” the ruler continued, her gaze sweeping over the gathered crowd. “We work together, support one another, and find solace in the bonds we forge. You are welcome here, not just as survivors, but as family.”
The weight of the words settled over her, a comfort to the wounds of the past. She glanced at her men, their expressions a mix of relief and cautious optimism. Liam stood tall, his eyes glistening with the promise of a future they had fought so hard for. Alex and William, their shoulders no longer tense with constant vigilance, allowed themselves a moment of vulnerability, their hands seeking the comfort of Emma’s touch.
Chris and Bash, ever the pillars of strength, nodded in agreement with the ruler’s words. They had seen the worst of humanity, but here, in this moment, they dared to believe in the best.
“You will be able to find your assigned homes based on group size transmission from the beginning of your journey. You will find your names on the building doors, but note, some bigger parties may find themselves living a little further removed to accommodate the size as most things were built with a family of four in mind.”
That earned a small chuckle from Alex.
“As you spend time in our community, requests to move can be made. At this time, there is no monetary system except within the ruling group so we can connect for supplies we need. For now, please, explore and enjoy. Your residences will be waiting!”
As Maria concluded her speech, Emma felt a surge of emotion threatening to overwhelm her. She stepped forward, her voice trembling with gratitude.
“Thank you,” she said, her words carrying the weight of their collective journey. “My name is Emma. We have dreamed of a place like this, a sanctuary where we can build a life together. Your kindness and generosity give us hope for a future we never thought possible.”
Maria, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “You are most welcome, Emma. We have all faced the darkness, but together, we shall find the light.”
With those words, the last vestiges of fear and uncertainty melt away. She turned to her men, their faces mirroring the hope and love that burned within her. This was their chance, their new beginning, and they would face it together, hand in hand, heart to heart.
As the islanders guided them further into the heart of the sanctuary, Emma found herself awestruck by the breathtaking beauty that enveloped them. Lush, verdant foliage stretched upwards, with vibrant bursts of color from exotic flowers peeking through the greenery. The air was rich with the scent of blooms and the soft rustle of leaves, creating a symphony of nature’s whispers. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy above, casting dappled patterns on the forest floor. It was a sight beyond anything she had ever witnessed, even in the most vivid photographs and movies.
Emma knew that they had found more than just a safe haven. They had found a home, a place where their love could flourish and their family could grow. With her men by her side, she was ready to embrace this new chapter, to face whatever challenges lay ahead, and to cherish every moment of the life they would build together.
“Shall we?” Liam’s voice broke the momentary silence, his hand outstretched toward Emma.
She took his hand, relishing the warmth of his touch, and nodded.
As they set off to explore the island, their footsteps fell lightly on the sandy paths, the sights and sounds of their new environment enveloping her in a way she had forgotten sound could. The lush greenery stretched out before them, a tapestry of vibrant hues that seemed to pulse with life. The gentle rustling of leaves and the distant calls of exotic birds created a symphony of tranquility, a stark contrast to the chaos they had left behind.
Emma’s eyes drank in every detail, from the imperfections in the weathered bark of the trees to the delicate petals of the wildflowers that dotted the undergrowth. The sanctuary was not without its flaws, but those imperfections only added to its charm, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, beauty could still thrive.
As they walked, her men fell into step beside her, their presence a comforting constant. Alex’s hand brushed against hers, a gentle reminder of his unwavering support. Chris and Bash flanked her on either side, their eyes alert and watchful, ever ready to protect their family. William brought up the rear, his quiet strength a reassuring presence.
Emma’s heart swelled with love for these men, each one a vital piece of the puzzle that made her whole.
“This place,” Alex breathed, his voice tinged with wonder. “It’s like a dream.”
Emma nodded, a smile playing at the corners of her lips. “A dream we fought for, a dream we earned.”
As they continued their exploration, the sense of peace that permeated the air seeped into their very bones. The weight of their past struggles seemed to lift with each step, replaced by a newfound lightness, a hope for the future that burned brightly within them.
Emma’s breath caught in her throat as she took in the stucco buildings that dotted the landscape, their labels of “school” and “medical” throwing her for a loop. She had known that people were surviving on this island, but she hadn’t expected to see such well-established structures.
“How long have they been here?” she whispered, turning to Liam.
He shrugged. “I don’t know for sure, but from the looks of it, they’ve been here longer than we thought.”
They continued their tour, passing by several more buildings that seemed to serve different functions within the community. There was a marketplace where vendors sold fresh produce and handmade goods, a workshop with tools and equipment strewn about, and a communal dining hall where people were gathered for a meal.
Emma couldn’t help but feel impressed by what these survivors had created. It was clear that they had worked hard to build and sustain this community on their own. As they passed by groups of people going about their daily tasks, Emma caught glimpses of children playing or couples walking hand in hand. It was heartwarming to see signs of love and normalcy in this seemingly desolate place.
“Next stop our new home?” Chris asked, his eyes actually leaving room for them to rebut if they wanted to explore more.
“I think a good rest is in order.” Liam responded.
“Are you really thinking a rest?” Alex quipped, drawing a laugh from all of them.
Everything was beautiful, and not just in a he-came-from-hell kind of way. The island without man’s intervention reminded him of Hawaii.
As they walked, the gravity of the situation really fell on his shoulders.
This wasn’t just a temporary shelter or a pit stop on their journey, this was going to be their new home.
Living on this island would mean adapting to a whole new way of life, away from everything he’d had ever known. But then again, he also couldn’t deny the sense of relief that washed over him.
He was so fucking tired of danger.
“Holy shit,” Bash stopped and nearly caused them all to collide in with him.
Alex couldn’t tear his eyes away from the towering apartment buildings that loomed before them, stretching at least five stories tall. The sight was a stark contrast to the bamboo walls and leaf roofs he’d been expecting.
“How is this possible?” he murmured, his voice laced with a mixture of awe and disbelief. “The resources, the manpower needed to build something like this...”
Emma stepped closer, her fingers intertwining with his. “It’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit,” she said softly. “These people must have understood their goals better than we’d thought. If only all of humanity could have come together like this.”
Alex turned to her, his hazel eyes searching her face. “You always see the best in people, don’t you?”
A gentle smile curved her lips. “It’s what keeps me going, the belief that there’s still good in this world, that we can make a difference.”
As they walked through the streets of the residential area, they encountered others from the ship, their faces etched with the same weariness and hope that Emma and her men carried. Brief exchanges of smiles and nods passed between them, a silent acknowledgment of the shared experiences that bound them together.
An elderly woman approached, her eyes crinkling at the corners as she offered a basket filled with vibrant tropical fruits. “Welcome,” she said warmly. “May you find peace and healing within these walls.”
Emma accepted the basket gratefully, her heart swelling with emotion. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice thick. “This is incredible. It’s hard to believe so much was done when the rest of the world struggled to survive.”
The woman placed a comforting hand on Emma’s arm. “You’re safe now, child. This is a place of new beginnings, where the wounds of the past can start to mend.”
Alex watched the exchange, marveling at the way Emma seemed to draw people to her, her innate kindness and empathy shining through even in the briefest of interactions. It was one of the many reasons he loved her, the way she could find the light in even the darkest of places.
As they continued their exploration, Alex’s mind drifted to the future, to the possibilities that lay ahead. With Emma by his side and their family around them, he knew that they could face whatever challenges this new life might bring. The apartment buildings stood as a symbol of hope, a promise of stability and a chance to build something lasting.
He squeezed Emma’s hand, his heart full of love and determination. “We’re home,” he said softly, his voice carrying the weight of their shared journey. “And together, we’ll make this place our own.”
“Now I know why she said larger groups would live further away. There’s no shot there’s a building large enough for five people in there,” Bash snorted, crossing his arms as if annoyed.
“Excuse me,” William stopped a man who appeared to be security of some sort in a strange black camo. “We’re a group of six. Can you show us where the larger living spaces are?”
“Names Carl, and happy to assist. Follow me.” He turned back the way he came, passing the circle of buildings. “It’s not as far away as you might have been led to believe. Just personal units instead of the apartments.”
“And the security?” Chris piped up.
“A little less, but there are still patrols and neighbors. Not as many animals roaming as you’re probably thinking.”
Alex kept his thoughts to himself because he didn’t want them split up, but he almost preferred the apartments if they were even the slightest bit safer.
Alex’s eyes scanned the lush surroundings as the group ventured deeper into the heart of the island. The weight of their journey seemed to lift with each step, replaced by a growing sense of hope and anticipation.
“Sorry, I didn’t catch your names,” Carl stopped in the middle of what looked like an ordinary street with two-story homes.
“Sorry, we’ve gotten used to our secrecy. I’m Chris. That’s Liam, Alex, William, Bash, and Emma.” He pointed as he spoke.
“It’s nice to meet you all. I recognize Emma’s name, so you are the third house.” Carl pointed. “The key is under the doormat, there are copies for emergencies but your privacy will not be invaded. Sort of like an apartment complex used to be.”
Alex’s gaze swept over the charming two-story house that stood before them, experiencing a mixture of awe and disbelief. The exterior was a warm, inviting shade of beige, with large windows that allowed the golden sunlight to filter through, casting a gentle glow on the well-manicured lawn. A cobblestone path led to the front door, flanked by vibrant flowerbeds bursting with colors he had never seen before—deep purples, vivid oranges, and soft pinks that seemed to dance in the balmy breeze.
As they approached the front door, Alex noticed the intricate woodwork that adorned the frame, the delicate carvings a testament to the craftsmanship and care that had gone into every detail. Emma bent down to retrieve the key from under the doormat, her slender fingers brushing against the soft, woven fibers. With a soft click, the door swung open, revealing a spacious foyer bathed in natural light.
Stepping inside, Alex’s senses were immediately overwhelmed by the sheer beauty and comfort of their new home. The hardwood floors gleamed beneath their feet, the rich, warm tones adding a touch of elegance to the space. To their right, a cozy living room beckoned, with plush couches in muted earth tones and a large, stone fireplace that promised warmth and comfort on cooler evenings. Built-in bookshelves lined the walls, already filled with an array of books, their spines a kaleidoscope of colors and titles.
As they ventured further into the house, Alex marveled at the open floor plan, the living room seamlessly flowing into a spacious kitchen that took his breath away. Smooth, granite countertops stretched out before them, the sleek, modern appliances a stark contrast to the rustic charm of the wooden cabinets. A large island stood at the center, with comfortable barstools that invited casual meals and intimate conversations.
The dining area was equally impressive, with a long, wooden table that could easily accommodate their entire family and then some. A beautiful chandelier hung above, its delicate crystals casting a soft, romantic glow over the space. French doors led out to a sprawling backyard, where a lush, green lawn was bordered by towering palm trees and fragrant blooms.
Ascending the stairs, Alex’s anticipation grew with each step. The second floor revealed four generously sized bedrooms, each with its own unique charm and character. The master suite was a true oasis, with a king-sized bed draped in soft, luxurious linens and a private balcony that overlooked the tranquil backyard. The en-suite bathroom was a work of art, with a large, soaking tub, a separate glass-enclosed shower, and double vanities crafted from rich, dark wood.
As they explored each room, Alex couldn’t help but marvel at the thoughtful details that had gone into every aspect of their new home. This was so much more than he’d ever expected.
Alex nodded, a smile tugging at his lips. “It’s perfect.”
He stepped back outside, feeling the gentle breeze caress his skin as he gazed out at the lush greenery that surrounded them. The island was a far cry from the broken world they’d left behind, a paradise untouched by the devastation that had claimed so many lives.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Emma’s voice pulled him from his thoughts, and he turned to find her standing beside him, her hazel eyes filled with wonder.
“It is,” he agreed, reaching out to tuck a stray curl behind her ear. “But not as beautiful as you.”
Emma laughed, the sound like music to his ears. “Always the charmer, aren’t you, Alexander?”
“Only for you now, Emma.” He pulled her into his arms, relishing the feel of her body against his. “I never thought we’d find a place like this. A place where we could be free, where we could be together without fear.”
“I know.” Emma’s voice was soft, filled with emotion. “It feels like a dream, but it’s real. We’re really here, and we’re safe.”
Alex nodded, his heart swelling with love for the woman in his arms. They had been through so much together, had faced countless dangers and obstacles, but through it all, their love had only grown stronger.
He heard the others join them outside, all taking in the silence and beauty around them.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange, Alex knew that this was only the beginning. They had a new life ahead of them, a life filled with possibilities and the promise of a brighter future.
And maybe even a baby to come one day.
