He holds up his cell and snaps a picture of me.
“What are you doing?”
“Capturing this moment… The first time I made my wife come.”
“How the fuck am I your wife?” I ask angrily, tired of him avoiding the question.
He only smirks and steps back, sliding his cell back into his pocket and then straightening his cock before he fixes my shirt.
“Are any of your wounds sore?” he asks, leaning in again.
“No, I feel good, surprisingly.”
“Good.”
“Stop avoiding my question.”
“I’ll tell you… during the Hunt.” He gives me a shit-eating grin as he shuts the door and rounds the hood to the driver’s side door. He’s still smiling when he climbs in. “I think you’ll like this.”
I don’t respond because, to be honest, his smile is making me smile.
THIRTY-FIVE
REON
“Are you okay?” I place my hand on her leg to calm her erratic bouncing as we get closer and closer to the clearing in the forest.
“What is that?” she asks, eyeing her prize.
“It’s what you get to Hunt,” I reply, the corner of my mouth tipping up.
“Who is it?”
I bring the car to a stop and get out. She doesn’t wait for me to open her door before she jumps out, then reaches back in for a jacket and throws it on. Her chocolate-colored eyes meet mine before they return to the man kneeling in the dirt with a bag over his head, his hands tied behind his back and secured to a tree. “Reon, who is it?”
“Pull his hood off,” I say, nodding at the man on his knees.
She approaches him slowly, then reaches for his hood and pulls it off. When she sees who it is, she doesn’t waste any time before she kicks him in the gut.
“You stupid piece of shit! Who do you think you are burning down my fucking apartment?”
“Stupid bitch. Let me fucking up, and I’ll give you the man you want,” Deven snarls while trying to get up with his hands still tied, but all he does is fall flat on his face.
“Fuck you,” she says, kicking him again, then turning to me, she demands, “Give me your axe.”
“Caterpillar, we have to at least give him a chance.” She stomps to the car, pulls open the door, and reaches inside for something before she stalks back to him. She cuts the rope, tying him to the tree, and he falls face-first. Then she cuts the tie from his hands before she kicks him in the back.
“Run, you little bitch.” She stomps.
Deven stands and takes one step toward her, but she holds the knife up for him to see. He looks over at me, and I smile at him before he runs. He’s probably still drunk, which means he’s going to bleed like a bitch if she cuts him right now.
“I’ll be on my way then.” She turns to the voice of Soren, who is standing at the back. He is the one who actually caught him. For her. A one-time deal, he said, in hopes that one day she will forgive him.
“You.” She seethes and looks at me. “Can I hunt him too?” she asks, gripping the knife tighter in her hand. I look up to Soren to find him smirking, then lean down and whisper in her ear, “You may, but he was the one who got him for you.” She turns and looks back at him before I see Deven turn and peer at the path ahead of him, which leads straight into the forest.
Lilith holds out her hand, and I pull the masks out of my pocket. Her eyes shimmer with excitement as she slides one on while Soren leaves.
“Are you afraid?” I ask before I put mine on.
