Cori

“Whose idea was it to play UNO again?” Jaylen asks, frowning as he sifts through the twenty-some cards in his hand.

“Mine. Now lay a card down. There’s gotta be something you can play,” Vaughn says, joking about the number of cards in Jaylen’s hand while daring him to say something about the game of choice for our impromptu game night.

Officially, I’ve already met Jaylen covering his basketball games, but unofficially we’ve only seen each other in passing over these last few months I’ve been with Vaughn.

Tonight is Vaughn’s attempt to change all that.

I was skeptical at first, but today turned out to be a great day.

We started out with lunch at The Diner. Then we spent the afternoon helping Ms. Barbara with her setup for the upcoming block party.

Besides just spending time with Vaughn, what I love most is seeing the interaction between him and his son.

When Jay throws down a draw two, and Vaughn and I each follow it up with one of our own, he cuts his eyes to Vaughn, who’s doing his best to hold in his laughter.

“I ain’t played UNO in a minute,” Jay grumbles as he sucks his teeth and draws his six cards. “Where did you find these shits from, anyway?”

“In the drawer with everything else,” Vaughn lies because these cards feel like a fresh pack. Jay notices it too and calls him out on it.

“You’s a lie, Pop. This gotta be a fresh pack. We could’ve been playing Spades right now just as easily.”

Vaughn clears his throat before cutting his eyes over at me.

“Well, some of us are Spades deficient,” he says and I don’t miss the double meaning of his words. Jay doesn’t either as he continues with his unfiltered commentary.

“Ms. Cori, you gonna let him try to take your Black card like that?” he says, nearly falling off the side of his chair with laughter while I pull out the same phrase every time my lack of Spades knowledge threatens my Black card.

“Spades or no Spades, my Black card will forever stay intact. Besides, we’re not a monolith.”

Vaughn and Jaylen pause in unison, giving me a skeptical look, then burst out into laughter again.

“You better not let my gram hear you say that shit,” Jay says, shaking his head. “My pops will get you straight though.”

“The hell I will. I ain’t messing up my streak for that,” Vaughn says seriously before turning to wink at my annoyed expression. Because apparently, Spades is not on the list of things he’s willing to lose for me.

I get the last laugh though when I go out on them three rounds later.

Vaughn takes his L more gracefully than Jaylen, who demands we run it back and is ready to redeem himself as he starts talking shit before the second game even starts.

The second time around, he makes a better showing, but we both still lose to Vaughn.

When Jaylen lobbies to run it back a third time, Vaughn shuts him down.

Then he stands from the chair at the table, yawning with his arms stretched up toward the ceiling, and I watch him, fixated on the area where his shirt rises, exposing the happy trail of hair on his stomach that disappears into the waistline of his pants.

“You ready?” He holds out his hand to me, obviously ready to leave if I’m not.

“I was trying to wait and say goodbye to your mom,” I say, looking toward the door where she’s due to show up any moment and Vaughn laughs.

“You know you’ll probably see her tomorrow, right?”

“I know,” I say but still don’t make a move because where I come from you don’t just show up at your potential mother-in-law’s house and leave without saying goodbye. Especially when she’s just a few flights up visiting a friend.

When I don’t immediately make a move to leave, Vaughn blows out a breath, then takes my hand before pulling me to the couch and down onto his lap.

“She got about another fifteen minutes before we dip,” Vaughn whispers in my ear and Jaylen heads down the hall to his room.

As soon as he’s out of sight, Vaughn wraps his arms around my waist, pulling me even closer as he grinds his hardening dick into me.

The friction sets off alarm bells in my head as I look at the door, ready to be caught like a teenager at any moment.

“What are you scared of? Didn’t I tell you I pay the bills in this motherfucker?

” he says, nuzzling my ear just as his mom comes through the door.

As soon as Ms. Barbara comes in singing an upbeat gospel hymn and sees me sliding off Vaughn’s lap, she goes silent as Vaughn buries his head in my side, shaking with laughter.

“I know you lying, Vaughn. Y’all better get your nasty asses off my couch and take that shit back there,” she curses and prepares to go in on both of us when her phone, Vaughn’s phone, and Jay’s phone on the table ping simultaneously with a message.

Vaughn and his mother exchange a look before looking down at their phones.

“My Lord,” Ms. Barbara calls out, touching her chest before looking over at us with wide eyes while familiar moans come out of Vaughn’s phone.

My stomach sinks and I’m afraid to look, but when Vaughn sits stock still and serious, seething at his phone that’s still playing the message, I look over to see a naked Vaughn in the bathroom of his home in Brunswick thrusting into my mouth.

Any other time I wouldn’t mind watching us… in private, but this unintentional public display makes me queasy. My mouth waters and my eyes go blurry right before I run for the hallway bathroom, barely making it in time to empty the entire contents of my stomach.
