“Who are they?”
“I have no idea. But they arrived after you.”
“They know I’m meeting you out back?”
“No.”
“Go back to work. I’ll give you a call in the morning, and we can talk then.”
“What about them?”
“Go back to work, Carlie.”
Carlie left my table and returned to the bar to take another order. The four men talked amongst themselves but kept staring. I’d been a fool to leave the gun in the car. I knew better. I needed to get my head out of my ass and pay attention to what was happening around me.
But then again, death would bring me closer to Suzanne. I moved from the table and started toward the side exit leading to the alley. The four men stopped talking. I opened the door, and they stood.
There were two possibilities. Either they were ex-cons I’d sent to prison at some point, or they had information about Suzanne and knew I was getting close. Regardless, I stepped through the open doorway and closed the door behind me.
