Chapter 15

Lucky

T houghts about the impossible situation swirled in my mind as I stared at my computer the next day at work, tapping my fingers on my desk. A lingering soreness reminded me of what I’d done with the guys. It had killed me to leave them, but I’d gone to work Friday morning then rushed home to spend my entire weekend in Vaelu’s bed, fucking them until none of us could move.

I liked that soreness. I wanted to always feel the echoes of them between my legs.

We’d talked more about our relationship, and they had both been clear that they wanted me to be with them, as their girlfriend, but their secret girlfriend. Vaelu and Relzo couldn’t even expose their relationship, and I would have to live in secret while Vaelu sorted out what to do about his people’s restrictive laws about inter-species dating.

There were no long-term prospects for us if he wanted to continue to live in Chokreini territory — we’d never get married or have children. Come to think of it, I wasn’t entirely sure what our family unit would look like with the three of us, though I knew if we went back to Merax that Aidro, the leader of that community, would marry us without hesitation. He was a Tholkon, and their family units were as varied as any I’d come across in my travels for school. Plus, he was like an uncle to me, and would only want to see me happy.

Returning to Merax 9. That was a real possibility, especially if we were found out, but what would it mean for my career? I couldn’t leave in the middle of a research project, leaving a black mark on my résumé. There was a small biology lab on the planet now, where they studied the plants and animals of Merax, but it was nothing like this project. Still, I made a note to message Himari about her latest project there. Letting my personal life impede my career and my dream seemed irresponsible, especially when I didn’t know if there was any real future with these two men.

They were bound together for life, and despite their promises to the contrary I worried that I may have just been a distraction for them. I looked up as Jaia walked into the room, leaning over my screen.

“This is interesting,” she said, pointing to a row of genetic markers that were flagged in the system as matching.

“It is. Do you want me to search for more that match?”

“Yes. But that’s not why I’m here.” She smiled and waved a little gold card at me. “There’s an event tomorrow night for the science labs. They’re celebrating the success of hosting a lab on the space station, and the achievements so far.”

“We’re only halfway through the project!”

She laughed. “It’s essentially a fundraiser. The concept is to convince our patrons that the space station science lab is still a brilliant idea.”

“Sounds fun.”

“If you like schmoozing with rich assholes,” she said, rolling her eyes. She’d broken her professional shell for some reason, but it didn’t bother me. This was the first I’d seen of Jaia’s real personality, and I kind of liked it.

“I’m not the best at schmoozing, but I’ll be there,” I said, smiling. And my first thought as she wandered back out of my office was to wonder if the guys would be there. Would they like to walk in with me on their arm, a pretty dress swishing around my legs?

“All right, well, you may go home for the evening and prepare. I understand that might take quite a lot of work for you,” Jaia said, breezing out of the room. What the hell did that mean?

And my heart dropped as I realized that could never happen. They’d have to stay away from me, so as not to arouse suspicion. In bed, everything seemed perfect. Out in the real world, there were things I wanted to do with my lovely men by my side but I couldn’t.

Would that eat away at me, destroying the foundations of our relationship?
