Chapter Four
T wist sat at the table sipping some iced tea and wondering if he could fit another serving of apple cobbler in his stomach.
He’d missed the home-cooked meals while he was on the road.
Tonight’s dinner of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, and green beans had him ready for an after-dinner nap.
Booker slid a piece of paper over to him. “Scoop got back to me with the address of the license tag you asked about.”
Twist had a license plate from the tow truck that had picked up Britt a week ago. He’d never had someone stay on his mind as long as Britt, though he’d only seen her for a short time. She had taken to appearing in his thoughts too many times to count.
Twist took the paper and read it. It belonged to an MC in Honey Creek, Nebraska.
“An MC?” he asked.
“Yep, looks like it’s a fairly new one in the last couple of years.
Per Scoop’s research, the Honey Creek Badgers MC is located off Highway 120.
They own Badgers Bar, Honey Creek RV & Resort, and Honey Creek Towing.
I’m curious why, if Britt had friends like that, she was running away from a wedding.
You’re right. Something does seem off about the whole encounter,” Booker said.
Twist’s senses were telling him he needed to explore this further, but how was the question. Staring at Booker, Twist grinned back at Booker’s smirk.
“You’re not going to let this go, are you?” Booker said.
Twist shook his head. Something about that woman had him in knots.
“You know, no one notices old people like Compass and me. We could take a car ride to eat at the café,” Maureen offered.
“You don’t have things you need to do?” Twist asked.
“We haven’t exactly advertised it. We were planning on some vacation time,” Compass said.
“I already looked at the town because Compass is getting a little stir-crazy. It’s time for one of our mini-vacations.
There are a couple cabins available at the RV & Resort.
They have some cute small-town things to check out, a diner, a bakery, and I always enjoy checking out small-town co-ops.
There’s a thrift shop, too. Compass and I could be checking out antiques and thrift shops,” Maureen offered.
“Didn’t I see that there was a storm system coming close to here?” Compass asked.
Twist nodded, “Yep, Dex is riding up and is going to go with me. I’ll take my backup truck.”
Twist thought through the options. His attraction to Britt was something he’d never experienced with any other woman. He couldn’t get her off his mind. It had taken all of his strength to not get on his bike and just ride, hoping he could figure out where she was.
He was already committed to storm chasing for the next two to three days. What could it hurt having Maureen and Compass check stuff out? More information was always a good thing.
“I appreciate it, and if you’re sure, I’ll take all the help I can get,” Twist said.
Britt flipped to the next video of Twist’s storm chasing.
When Buzzard had picked her up, he’d recognized Twist from his videos.
Buzzard was always interested in storm chasers.
Twister and Twisters were his favorite movies.
She enjoyed them both but not the ten times a month he watched them.
When he wasn’t watching the movies, he was watching storm chasers’ videos.
She found the videos from his most recent trip, which he’d been coming back from the night he’d interrupted their quest. She giggled when she saw the caption— Too Funny Not to Post.
She pressed play. Within seconds, she was giggling, even though she wasn’t someone who giggled ever. The longer she watched, the funnier it was.
Snipe, Buzzard, and Gracelyn came over to see why she was laughing. She played the video of the big, tattooed biker crawling into the bottom of the converted van to hide, all while yelling, I’m gonna die and I’m gonna kill you all if you share this.
Snipe chuckled. “I’ve watched that video multiple times, and it keeps getting funnier,” he said.
Gracelyn, or Daydream, her MC name, was chuckling and wiping tears from her eyes.
Britt didn’t know how Gracelyn had done it.
Sure, she’d grieved when her husband was killed, but her Pollyanna-type personality had come back.
She still grieved, but Gracelyn was determined to be the best mom to her kids.
She still saw the world through rose-colored glasses.
Britt had always been a little more on the solemn, grumpy side.
She saw the possibilities and always had multiple scenarios because shit would eventually hit the fan.
“Check out the comments. The guy who is screaming in the video started posting threats about what will happen if it’s not taken down,” Gracelyn said, smiling.
Britt scrolled through them, giggling along with the others.
The back and forth between Twist and the other biker was hysterical.
The other biker must be in Kansas City because he threatened Twist with never tasting Kansas City barbecue again.
Then someone named Pit told Twist if he kept the video up, he could eat free at his barbecue restaurant for life.
With the quests they participated in, Britt didn’t get to laugh a lot.
These videos had been a perfect way to lift her spirits, though she’d wanted to get her mind off the tattooed, bearded man.
In the video she was watching, Twist had his hair down, and it reached his shoulders.
She’d thought he was sexy before, but him kissing down her body with his hair trailing across her skin had her wondering if it was hot in the room.
“I’m heading to the bar to work. Abby has the kids, but Lane Jr. wants his Aunt Britt to help him pick out a Lego set. He said he wants to build like you,” Gracelyn said.
“Oh no. Now you just gave her the perfect reason to go shopping for Legos,” Snipe said, grinning .
Britt stood up. “I’d be happy to. You know I love your little ones.”
Gracelyn nodded. “I know, and I’m glad they all have you. Without our family, I couldn’t do this.”
Gracelyn walked toward the door.
“Hey, wait up. I’m heading over to the bar. I’ll walk with you or drive you, if that’s okay,” Buzzard said.
Britt watched her friends walk out the door.
Gracelyn was strong. She’d had to be after her husband was killed, but Gracelyn had also kept the softness.
Sometimes she seemed fragile, as if a stiff wind could knock her down.
They all watched out for her, especially the guys.
There was no way they would allow those children to lose both parents.
Well, she’d spent enough time pining over the hot guy.
She wasn’t sure why she was stalking him because the odds of her seeing him again, when he didn’t know where she lived, were minuscule.
He’d ruined her quest, but she couldn’t trust him with the truth.
He’d been the guy at the right time, helping her, but what if he was actually a part of the trafficking?
He could have been sent in to see if she was for real or a trap.
But now, her face had been seen, so she wouldn’t get to play the damsel in distress next time on that road, which sucked. She’d worked hard on that scenario for the quest, and in minutes, biker boy had screwed it up. Despite all that, she still couldn’t get him off her mind.
She’d go help pick out Legos for her buddy, and then maybe she’d go hang out at the bar and check her online auctions. She’d become obsessed with Legos, and there were a couple retired ones that she was specifically interested in. Maybe they’d keep her mind off the storm-chasing biker.
