CHAPTER 12
“You want to talk about it?” Nort asked Berk.
Berk looked at his dad, “Talk about what?”
“What it means to be mated to a dragon shifter.” Nort said in words, but the tone had a, “Duh,” in there as well.
Shrugging, Berk said, “I don’t know what to say, Dad. I don’t understand it all myself. I know it seems like I’ve rushed into this, but I can’t say I regret it. If anything, I feel complete... whole... shit... I don’t know. I feel like everything I’ve ever been missing has been filled. It’s not just mating with Garth, but you and Mom too. I feel like everything I was ever meant to have is with me for once. I don’t feel...”
“Alone.” Nort said with a nod. “I can tell. So can your mom. If it means anything, your mom and I are really happy for you, son. You deserve the future you have in front of you, and all we have ever wanted has been for you to find peace.”
Berk grasped his dad’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “I am at peace. It’s kind of embarrassing to know you and Mom heard us last night, but I couldn’t wait another minute to bond with Garth.”
“What’s it like?” Nort asked, then when the man saw his confusion, he added, “Being bonded. What’s it like?”
“It’s hard to explain, but I can feel him in here.” Berk said, pointing at his head and then his heart, “And here. I know that he’s worried about me and he’s being a very bad mate right now.”
“Bad how?” Nort asked with confusion.
Berk stopped and looked down at his map they were given at the gate. “He’s listening in to our conversation.”
“I’m not listening in, I’m scanning the area looking for Carl Deaven. It would not be good for him to be spying on you, and for you and your father to be caught unawares.”Garth said, within his mind.
It still freaked Berk out that they could mind speak and also Garth could see whatever Berk did if he wanted to. Apparently, mating a dragon had its perks. To Bo’s relief it meant that Trevor didn’t have to join them for this task, since Garth could follow everything through their bond.
Hearing shouting, Berk held his father back. “Wait here.”
“What are you doing?” Nort asked.
Berk ignored his father, not wanting to let the people arguing see him coming. Instead he held up his hand and his father watched as Berk made his way to the seal-feeding area.
“Damn it, Carl, leave Sally alone. She’s in no condition for your shit.”
Berk looked around the corner and saw Carl facing off with a large dark-haired man and a woman that stood behind him looking terrified.
“I want to know who the father of her child is, and I want to know now. She wasn’t given permission to procreate, and I want to know who fathered that baby.” Carl snarled.
“And I already told you it’s none of your business. Back the fuck off.” The dark-haired man snarled.
“Just what do you think you’re going to do, Johnson? Hurt me?Killme?” Carl tossed his head back laughing an evil laugh. The second he stopped laughing, Carl looked Johnson directly in the eyes, “There is nothing you or anyone here can do to me, Johnson. I would have thought you would have learned that lesson when I killed Thomas. Now stand back so I can get my answers.
Berk could see that things were going to get ugly really fast. Thinking quickly, he shouted, “Hey Dad, I think I found the place.” Pulling out his map he shouted out, “But I think we’re too early for the feeding demonstration.”
“Don’t even think about it, Berk! Get away from them!”Garth practically snarled in his mind.
“I can’t let him hurt these people if I can stop it, Garth.”Berk insisted.
Pulling up courage he didn’t know he had, Berk continued to walk forward, pretending to look at the map.
“Well hello, Berk. I’m surprised to see you here. It isn’t time for the seal feeding for another hour.” Carl said, with a sickening sweet tone that made Berk’s skin crawl.
“Hey, Carl. I didn’t know you’d be here... and yeah, we were looking forward to the feeding and didn’t want to miss it. I’m just didn’t realize the time.” Berk said, with a smile as fake as you could get.
Nort came up beside Berk, “Sorry if we’re in a place we shouldn’t be, Carl. We were just really excited to see the feeding of the seals. I always wanted to attend one of those... well, that and the polar bears.”
“Berk, get out of there.”Garth warned in a harsh tone.“He will smell that your scent has changed damn it!”
“He was about to hurt or kill this woman and man, Garth. I don’t know what’s going on completely, but Carl admitted to killing some guy named Thomas. I couldn’t let him do the same to them.”
