A chill runs down my spine. “I only met him when he was assigned to Warrior Black,” I explain, then pull out my phone and quickly dial Tobias’s number.
“Pen.”
“How did Jordan come to us?” I ask, putting my phone on speaker and turning up the volume so everyone can hear.
Right then, Callum comes out, stands by me and listens attentively to Tobias. “He came to us from Dean Harper’s crew last year. Why?”
“Dean’s men confirm that they never met Jordan until they got to Colorado,” I state, gripping the phone tight.
“Fuck,” Tobias hisses. “Are you sure?”
“Yes. And there’s more.”
“What?” he clips out, an edge of ire coating the word.
“Callum was spooked in the woods. He thought he heard the same man who attacked him in Evergreen call out his namehere. Then he got knocked out. He has a large lump on the back of his head.”
“I need to call Dean. Wait for my call back.”
“Wait,” I begin to say, but he hangs up. I wanted to ask if he had heard from Dom.
“What do we do in the mean time?” Fig asks, as he looks to me.
I glance at Callum, and the storm of emotions across his face gives me no choice but to propose that we get the hell out of here. “Since this place isn’t any safer than Colorado, we are heading to San Francisco. And you, Callum Fitz, will be under lock and key until all this is over.”
Chapter Twenty-Three
Dom
As I clip on my lap belt in the private jet Dean procured for me, my phone vibrates with a call. I pick it up, glance at the screen and release a breath before tappingAccept.
“Thanks for picking up the call,” Leo says with a chuckle.
“You are welcome. Now tell me what you got. Is Callum’s mom safe? Did you find the person who’s been fucking with Rick?”
“Callum’s mom is all set. But Rick… I tried calling Rick after you reached out to me, but he never answered. I even tried to text him, thinking he’s afraid to answer an unknown number, but I never got a response back. So…”
“That’s odd. I’ll call him once I get off with you,” I say.
“You know I don’t play that way, Rossetti,” Leo replies with another laugh.
“You wish,” I counter, then see that I have another call coming in. “Hey, gotta go. But I’ll call you later about Rick.”
“Sounds good.” Then Leo hangs up, and I answer the other call.
“What the hell, Dom? I don’t appreciate your cryptic message to call you back,” Tobias growls.
“Sorry, man. But you didn’t pick up earlier and I didn’t want to talk until I got on the plane. We have a problem. I don’t think the attacks on Callum are from Brian.”
“What do you mean?”
“Not going into details, but you know I used to be a U.S. Marshal. One of my past cases might have caught up with me.”
“I need full disclosure, Dom,” Tobias demands.
“Can we do this when I?—”
“There’s a change in plans,” Tobias interjects. “You’re coming straight to San Fran. Dean’s guys are already filing a new flight plan for your plane.”
