Alexandra leaned back against the fluffed-up pillows. She was beyond exhaustion and yet, at the same time, she’d never been so excited. Her eyes watched Kat clean her newborn son and swaddle him before she returned to Alexandra’s bedside and gently placed him in her arms.
“He’s beautiful,” Kat said.
“Aye, like his father. I can’t take my eyes off of him,” Alexandra said with a tired laugh.
Staring at the child in the crook of her arm, Alexandra wondered if she was dreaming. He was just as she imagined he would be. Fingering his tiny hand, she admired his thick dark hair and his large brown eyes.
Suddenly, without warning, the bedchamber door crashed open. It slammed against the wall only to swing back again toward the McGregor who froze in the doorway. Startled, Alexandra looked up in time to see the fleeting emotions that crossed his face as he entered the room and rushed to her side. Panic, relief, love, and awe. He knelt and engulfed her, placing one arm on the pillow over her head and the other around her arms holding the baby.
Kat slipped out unnoticed and closed the door behind her.
“I came as soon as I could. The unexpected snow slowed us down considerably.” Ian kissed her and asked, “All went well? You are okay? The babe?”
“Yes, meet your son.” Alexandra tenderly transferred her son into her husband’s arms. Her heart was so full of love, it could burst.
Ian stood and held the babe out in front of him. Staring at the child with amazement, he declared proudly, “I told you we would have a son.”
“Aye, and I told you we’d have a daughter,” Alexandra smiled as she answered.
As if on cue, a tiny cry emerged from the crib that stood against the wall. Ian looked toward the crib and then down at the babe in his hands and back at the crib once more.
Alexandra laughed at the incredulous look on his face. She held up her arms to take her son and said, “Why don’t you go say hello to your daughter?”
