Page 105 of Through the Storms
“What?” Riley refrained from saying,Why would you want to thank that asshole?
“It doesn’t look like the tornado threat extends to Dallas, but Summerton’s likely on the watch list. At least I won’t have to worry about her.”
Riley nodded. “I suppose it’s best to look at the positives in all situations.” Had that come out as loaded as Riley thought it had?
Chloe took a step toward Riley. “About that—”
“You are so dead when I catch you,” Britt’s voice rang out.
“What the hell?” Riley said and looked around the side of the van.
Oakley ran across the parking lot as the much shorter Britt lost ground with each stride.
Chloe stepped up beside Riley. “What are those two doing?”
“I have no idea. But Britt’s obviously pissed off at Oakley.”
When Oakley reached a spot halfway across the lot, she turned and ran backward. “What’s your problem? I did you a favor.”
Britt lowered her head and ran faster. A few of the other storm chasers readying their vehicles called out to them as they raced past.
Asher walked up beside Riley and Chloe. “What are those two fools doing?”
“No clue,” Riley answered.
“I can’t take them anywhere.” Asher shook his head, but his eyes were full of affection.
Oakley made a beeline toward Asher, grabbed him by the arms, and pushed him out in front of her. “Protect your baby sister.”
“Oh, sure, now you want me to be the big brother,” Asher said. “What did you do to her?”
“Why are you always taking her side?” Oakley whined.
“Because I know you.”
“Good point.” Oakley chuckled. “But this time, I was being helpful.”
A red-faced Britt neared them. Her breath was ragged. “Move aside, Asher, and you won’t get hurt,” she said between pants.
“You should really give up smoking,” Oakley said over Asher’s shoulder.
“Dumbass, I don’t smoke.” Britt glared and lunged at Oakley.
Oakley easily sidestepped Britt’s outstretched hand. “Oh, yeah, that’s right. Then maybe you should grow some longer legs.”
Britt looked up at Asher. “I am seriously going to murder your sister.”
“Tell me what she did this time,” Asher said. “But make it quick, we need to hit the road.”
“I got her a date,” Oakley blurted out.
“A date that I was working on getting myself,” Britt said.
Oakley snorted. “Like all the other dates that you’vealmostgot. My actions were not only justifiable, but necessary and kind. Just the other day, you were whining that everyone was getting some except you.”
Britt’s cheeks reddened. “That’s not the point.”
“What’s the point then?” Oakley asked.
