Page 43 of The Worst Vacation Crush
“What?” I glanced down at my outfit. “I’m not dressed for the water.”
Kai stopped and moved my hat to give me a peek at his shorts. “The sooner I wet down the rest of my shorts, the better.”
“But my shorts are perfectly dry.”
“Um-hum. And you’re about as uptight as a British nanny. The water will loosen you up a bit. You’re not still scared of sharks, are you?”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m not scared of anything.” That wasn’t exactly true, but this wasn’t the time to tell him about my massive fear of heights, creepy-crawlies, and failure.
We stood on the beach, half-way to where the water met land. A smile spread across his face, and he put my hat on my head. “Prove it then.”
He took a few steps backward, pulled his shirt off, and tossed it to the ground. Yesterday had definitely not been a mirage. Kai was just as scrumptious as I remembered. In a beach filled with half-dressed people, I only had eyes for him.
He suddenly turned and sprinted for the water. “Eat my sand, donut girl.”
Oh, it was on!
Kai was right. A vacation was exactly what I needed, and I was going to take one—for a day. Who knew? Maybe the answer to my dilemma would come to me when I least expected it if I took a step back from work for a little while.
One thing was certain. I was totally following that set of abs into the water.
I’d prove I wasn’t scared of sharks and that I knew how to have fun…
But not too much fun.
I trotted back to the stand of palms and tossed my purse into some electric-green bushes growing next to them. I turned around and headed for the water in time to see Kai take his first splashing steps into it.
If we’d been racing, I’d have been the loser. But as it was, I was a spectator and that made me absolutely the winner.
I had exactly twenty running steps to figure out how much fun with Kai was too much. I’d have to trust him not to cross those lines he was talking about yesterday.
But could I trust myself?
