I was pretty sure if the interview was actually going well, I wouldn’t be all kinds of excited about something as simple as the boss knowing my name.
But whether this was a good sign or not, Mr. Peters knew I was in the room. And as long as he remembered that, I still had a shot at making an impression.
So, what was his question again?
“This stuff is gold. Kai is a fountain of insights into the Hawaiian Islands. You should be taking notes.”

Like a secretary?
No, thank you. That’s not the position I came to interview for. No offense to all the office warriors out there, but a secretary position wasn’t going to be enough to get me out of my squatty little office next to the dragon queen.
Nope. I was here for the management position.
Mr. Peters slid a pen and notebook toward me.
I suddenly realized my expectations had been all wrong. I wasn’t here to land the branch manager job, after all.
I was here to watch Kai get it.
